# Frontend research bench
Repository-owned workflows executed by the sibling `infospace-bench` package.
Verified against its checkout `be872bf` on 2026-09-24. This is a source investigation
workspace; `canon/`, `patterns/` and the research program remain authoritative.
Repository-owned source investigations executed through infospace-bench. New
workspaces use `conditional-v1`; historical workspaces retain their recorded policy.
Live calls use llm-connect exclusively. Canonical admission remains editorial.
## Quick start
## Environment and checks
The current workstation already has the bench environment installed. Override
`BENCH_PY` with another Python interpreter where `infospace-bench`, PyYAML and
pytest and llm-connect are installed.
If needed: `uv pip install --python "$BENCH_PY" -e ../llm-connect`. The sibling package has local dependencies on markitect-tool,
artifact-store and llm-connect; this repo does not duplicate their installation.
`BENCH_PY` defaults to `../infospace-bench/.venv/bin/python`. It needs infospace-bench,
PyYAML, pytest and llm-connect (`uv pip install --python "$BENCH_PY" -e ../llm-connect`
if the local package is missing). Run `make bench-test schema-test bench-plan`.
The final command inspects the historical synthetic fixture without calling a model.
## A question-driven investigation
1. State the unresolved question, hypothesis and possible counterexample in the source
packet's editorial section. Consult the walkthrough's evidence gaps before collecting
more sources. Follow [SourceInput](SourceInput.md); summaries are not original evidence.
2. Initialize one immutable source per workspace, then inspect the plan:
```bash
make bench-test
make bench-plan
../infospace-bench/.venv/bin/python scripts/research_bench.py init /path/to/source.md --slug question-01
../infospace-bench/.venv/bin/python scripts/research_bench.py plan research/bench/infospaces/question-01
```
`bench-plan` inspects the checked-in synthetic example without calling a model.
`infospaces/fixture-smoke/` contains its completed four-stage run, prompts, fixture
responses, provenance and review. It verifies workflow plumbing only. Its candidate
does not count toward the research corpus, evidence or M1 acceptance.
To repeat the fixture in a fresh temporary workspace:
```bash
BENCH_PY=../infospace-bench/.venv/bin/python
pilot_workspace=$(mktemp -d /tmp/frontend-patterns-bench.XXXXXX)
"$BENCH_PY" scripts/research_bench.py init research/bench/fixtures/source.md \
--workspace "$pilot_workspace" --slug fixture
"$BENCH_PY" scripts/research_bench.py run "$pilot_workspace/infospaces/fixture" \
--fixture-responses research/bench/fixtures/responses.yaml
```
## Investigate a real source
1. Obtain and review an original source using the [research protocol](../plan/ResearchProtocol.md).
Prepare a bounded normalized Markdown excerpt with stable section/paragraph
locators. Record any omitted context. No source acquisition or URL fetching is
performed by this adapter.
2. Add the metadata shown in [SourceInput](SourceInput.md). Identify the original
author, URL/bibliographic locator, version and access date. This is required
provenance, not a claim that the source was independently verified.
3. Initialize a uniquely named workspace and inspect its plan:
```bash
../infospace-bench/.venv/bin/python scripts/research_bench.py init /path/to/source.md \
--slug carniato-review-01
../infospace-bench/.venv/bin/python scripts/research_bench.py plan \
research/bench/infospaces/carniato-review-01
```
4. Use the deployed llm-connect service. On this workstation, forward its port
in a separate terminal (leave it running for the investigation):
3. For live execution, keep a service port-forward running in a separate terminal:
```bash
kubectl -n activity-core port-forward svc/llm-connect 18081:8080
```
Then run in a fresh workspace:
```bash
../infospace-bench/.venv/bin/python scripts/research_bench.py run \
research/bench/infospaces/question-01 \
--llm-connect-url http://127.0.0.1:18081 --model custodian-triage-balanced \
--diagnostics --max-tokens 3000 --max-calls 3
```
The service owns provider credentials/routing. The model argument may name a runtime
profile; actual model is recorded. Sources/drafts reach its provider. The inspected
OpenRouter route drops `reasoning_effort`; it is not a working control for that route.
A service-request ceiling does not bound internal retries or dollars. Token caps are
requested per response, not a total input-plus-output budget.
## Conditional execution
The copied `profile/execution.json` opts new workspaces into this policy:
- Claims and candidates use compact source-grounded model outputs. Candidate evidence
ledgers must pass structural screening before further work.
- With fewer than two candidates, the adapter writes an empty relation array with
deterministic provenance and makes no relation call.
- With multiple candidates, one model call proposes relations. Endpoints must resolve
to candidate IDs and every edge must satisfy the structural contract. Invalid
proposals are quarantined in `reports/rejected-stage.json`; execution stops.
- The historical stage ID `critique` now writes a deterministic screen and editorial
checklist to `output/evaluations/source-review.md`. No automatic self-critique call.
This compatibility filename does not mean editorial review has happened.
Successful uncached runs therefore use two or three adapter calls, compared with
four historically. `plan.provider_calls` is the uncached upper bound; the minimum
assumes successful execution without reuse. A lower `--max-calls` is enforced during
execution: if a needed call exceeds it, the attempted workspace fails and remains
immutable. Nothing automatically retries, promotes artifacts, or marks them reviewed.
## Explicit reuse
Create a fresh workspace for the same source and use `--reuse-from`:
```bash
../infospace-bench/.venv/bin/python scripts/research_bench.py run \
research/bench/infospaces/carniato-review-01 \
--llm-connect-url http://127.0.0.1:18081 \
--model custodian-triage-balanced --diagnostics \
--max-tokens 3000 --max-calls 4
research/bench/infospaces/question-02 \
--llm-connect-url http://127.0.0.1:18081 --model custodian-triage-balanced \
--diagnostics --max-tokens 3000 --max-calls 0 \
--reuse-from research/bench/infospaces/question-01
```
In-cluster consumers can use `http://llm-connect.activity-core.svc.cluster.local:8080`.
The service owns credentials and provider routing. `--model` names a service runtime
profile or requests a model; the resolved model is recorded from the response.
The bench uses llm-connect's `RunConfig` and `/execute` contract. It makes no direct
provider requests and has no client retries. Sources and drafts reach the service's
configured provider. The four-call ceiling bounds **service requests**, not internal
provider retries, tokens or dollars. `--max-tokens` is a requested per-response cap.
The service may apply profile settings. Actual model, usage, finish reason and
selected routing metadata are retained in receipts and artifact provenance; cost
remains unknown unless independently measured. Empty or incomplete responses stop
the workflow and retain diagnostic metadata. Successful runs remain unreviewed.
Only completed conditional runs with a matching cache-file digest are eligible.
Keys include source hash, every profile file, workflow, rendered prompt, stage,
input ID, adapter/settings and execution/screen code hashes. Changed inputs/settings
miss the cache. A zero-call ceiling prevents paid fallback. Legacy receipts without
a stage cache cannot be replayed this way; cite their artifacts directly instead.
5. Review `artifacts/generated/claims.md`, `candidates.md`, `relation-proposals.md`
and `output/evaluations/source-review.md`. The review receives original source
text plus all previous outputs. It is an assisted self-review; a successful
run never marks it independently reviewed.
6. Update the source/candidate catalogs and question ledger after review. Use the
[admission procedure](Admission.md) before copying anything to `patterns/`.
Then compare the two source investigations in VC-01/VC-02 walkthroughs.
Reuse is an explicit replay of recorded evidence, not a fresh provider observation.
Remote profile changes cannot be detected from a local fingerprint. Omit reuse when
a new model/profile observation is the research question. Reused artifacts carry
`reused_from` and `current_provider_call: false`; their original usage remains historical
provenance. Use the research receipt's current-call/current-token totals for cost
accounting, not a sum over reused artifact metadata.
## Execution and evidence boundaries
## Review and cycle metrics
- One source per workspace. The inspected upstream runner keeps one intermediate
result per stage, not per source. The adapter refuses multiple sources so stages
cannot mix documents. Cross-source synthesis is a subsequent explicit review.
- Workflow order: claims → candidates → relation proposals → critique. Each stage
retains the original source. Empty candidate/relation proposals are valid findings.
- Candidates and relations remain generated Markdown proposals. Native bench
entity splitting requires at least one candidate and would reject legitimate
negative results. Typed graph admission therefore follows review, not generation.
- Source digests are checked before running. Workflow/prompt digests and a start
receipt are written before any call; failures remain visible. Reusing an attempted
workspace is refused. Make a new revision workspace instead of overwriting results.
- Use this adapter's `plan` and `run` for the custom workflow. The generic `generate`
pipeline selects its own workflow names; native dry-run rendering cannot resolve
downstream references to assisted outputs that have not been generated yet.
- Bench `validate` checks its registered artifact contracts. Generated research
proposals have no automatic semantic validation here. Structural metrics and an
empty validation error list do not prove evidence quality or pattern validity.
- Fixture responses are allowed only for synthetic sources through the CLI.
Fixture provenance remains visible in manifests and run records.
Read `reports/research-run.json`: actual attempted calls, cache hits, deterministic
stages, safe response usage/diagnostics, and structural rejection counts. Live
`reported_tokens_this_run` excludes reused usage; missing provider usage is not a
billing measurement. `rejected_assertions` counts structural findings, not a semantic
truth score. `editorial_corrections: null` means not yet assessed, never zero corrections.
## Current source queue
Record a named editorial review using [ResearchReviewMetrics](../../templates/ResearchReviewMetrics.yaml),
with individual rejected assertions and corrections linked to artifacts. Check source
fidelity, scope, known-use independence, counterexamples and applicability. Apply
[Admission](Admission.md) before moving any proposal into canonical patterns.
| Investigation | Input readiness | Work record |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Carniato first source case | Manual review plus completed llm-connect draft; admission rejected | FEP-WP-0002-T02 |
| Contrasting local-first source | Manual plus completed bounded live review; no candidates justified | FEP-WP-0002-T02 |
| VC-01 and VC-02 synthesis | Depends on reviewed source claims and candidate patterns | FEP-WP-0002-T03 |
`--diagnostics` retains only allowlisted numeric settings/usage and reasoning-field
presence. Raw debug bodies, headers and internal reasoning text are discarded.
Incomplete normal generated text is quarantined in `reports/rejected-response.md`,
with digest and rejection status. Immutable receipts preserve failures.
Do not ingest the existing Carniato research stub as if it were the original article.
## Verified examples and limitations
- `fixture-smoke`: historical four-stage synthetic execution, never research evidence.
- `conditional-smoke-01`: two fixture calls plus deterministic relations/review.
- `conditional-reuse-01`: same inputs reused with zero new calls. These demonstrate
routing and provenance, not measured live token savings or improved research quality.
- [Truncation diagnosis](../reviews/TruncationDiagnosis.md): live compact-output repair.
- [Implementation evidence](../reviews/LocalFirstEvidenceExpansion.md): completed Joplin
and Obsidian investigations; the latter's invalid relations were rejected editorially.
- [Optimization review](../reviews/ResearchOptimization.md): policy checks and VC-02 result.
Primary-source plans (four calls each; each run failed on its first call):
```bash
../infospace-bench/.venv/bin/python scripts/research_bench.py plan research/bench/infospaces/carniato-authority-01
../infospace-bench/.venv/bin/python scripts/research_bench.py plan research/bench/infospaces/local-first-authority-01
```
These short packets isolate the first comparison question. They do not substitute
for full source review, independent known uses or the two architecture walkthroughs.
## Live pilot outcome — 2026-09-24
Both primary-source runs attempted Gemini 2.5 Flash through OpenRouter and failed
before producing research artifacts. A separate credential probe returned HTTP 401.
Their failed receipts remain immutable. Read [AuthorityPilot](../reviews/AuthorityPilot.md)
for the manual review that continued independently. Subsequent live runs use the llm-connect service and fresh workspace slugs;
no workstation provider credential is required.
Failure receipts now capture adapter/model and safe structured diagnostic fields;
raw provider error bodies, headers and credential values are never persisted.
The initial failed receipts predate this improvement; the review records their model.
## llm-connect service pilot — 2026-09-24
Live execution now uses llm-connect exclusively. The service's
`custodian-triage-balanced` profile resolved to `google/gemini-2.5-flash`:
| Workspace | Outcome | Service requests | Reported total tokens |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| carniato-authority-02 | Claims truncated at 4,000 completion tokens | 1 | 4,470 |
| carniato-authority-03 | Four stages completed; unreviewed generated artifacts | 4 | 12,638 |
| local-first-authority-02 | Claims truncated at 12,000 completion tokens | 1 | 12,489 |
All receipts are retained. Token totals include failed responses and are not dollar
costs. No additional local-first retry was made. See
[the service pilot review](../reviews/LLMConnectPilot.md) for rejected proposals and
follow-up work. The current profile is a triage profile; research suitability has
not been established. Successful service execution is not evidence acceptance.
## Bounded refinement — 2026-09-25
The current prompts bound stage output length, distinguish claim IDs from candidate
IDs, and require a JSON evidence ledger. Run `scripts/research_admission.py` before
editorial admission review (see Admission.md). Historical workspaces preserve their
original prompts and are not silently migrated.
The 2026-09-25 local-first attempt used a requested low reasoning effort and 6,000 maximum
completion tokens per response, four service requests maximum, with no client retry
or automatic rerun. This is at most 24,000 requested completion tokens across four
responses; input tokens, internal retries and dollar cost are outside that bound.
The service owns profile resolution and provider support for reasoning settings;
a recorded request is not proof the provider honored every setting. Shorter prompts
and changed reasoning settings are a combined experiment, not an isolated causal test.
That attempt (`local-first-authority-03`) truncated at claims: one request, 6,525
reported total tokens. No further retry was made. See
[refinement review](../reviews/ResearchPipelineRefinement.md) for the remaining
execution limitation and the captured-failure screening report.
## Execution diagnostics and compact output
`--diagnostics` requests llm-connect's per-call debug capture but stores only an
allowlisted summary: numeric generation settings, presence of reasoning fields,
numeric usage/cost and reasoning-token counts. It never writes raw debug bodies,
headers, prompts or internal reasoning text. The service response may contain those
fields transiently; this consumer discards them. Availability depends on the server.
Normal model-generated incomplete content is quarantined separately as
`reports/rejected-response.md`, with a hash and rejected status in the receipt;
it is not registered as a completed research artifact.
The inspected llm-connect OpenRouter adapter drops `reasoning_effort`. Live diagnostic
capture confirmed its absence at the provider boundary. Do not use that flag as a
working control for this route; it remains available for other service implementations.
The local-first diagnostic output was a table header followed by tens of thousands
of spaces. Current prompts use compact records and explicitly forbid padded tables.
See the [truncation diagnosis](../reviews/TruncationDiagnosis.md) for measured outcomes.
Local-first `-06` subsequently completed all four stages at the 3,000-token response
cap using compact records. Its empty candidate/relation outcome passes structural
screening; editorial review admits no patterns. The next work is source expansion,
not another truncation retry.
## Implementation evidence — 2026-09-25
`joplin-conflicts-01` and `obsidian-conflicts-01` completed four stages each using
llm-connect with compact prompts and a 3,000-token response cap. Joplin passes
structural screening; Obsidian's invalid claim-ID relations are blocked. Editorial
synthesis is [Conflict Copy](../candidates/ConflictCopy.md), a hypothesis research
draft with two documented uses. See [expanded review](../reviews/LocalFirstEvidenceExpansion.md)
for scope, source locators, rejected guarantees and remaining research work.
One source per workspace remains necessary because upstream stage outputs are keyed
by stage rather than source. Cross-source synthesis is separate editorial work.
Structural screening cannot establish source truth, independent recurrence, durability
or semantic validity. No live model call is needed merely to rephrase unchanged evidence.

# Synthetic interrupted form scenario
## Scenario
A user types into a form while the server is unreachable. The draft remains
visible in the current session. On reconnect, the server can reject submission.
The interface shows pending and rejected states separately from committed data.
## Trade-off
Keeping drafts near the interaction improves continuity but requires explicit
handling of divergence from accepted server data. This fictional example does
not establish recurrence, persistence after restart or accessibility compliance.

## Context
An interrupted form session awaiting server acceptance.
## Problem
How can input remain intelligible before server confirmation?
## Forces
Interaction continuity improves; divergence-handling complexity increases.
## Solution
Hold a draft locally and display its uncommitted status.
## Dynamics
Submission may move from pending to rejected or accepted.
## Resulting Context
The application must decide retry, reconciliation and recovery behavior.
## Consequences
The user can keep typing but must understand what has actually been saved.
## Failure Modes
Confusing a local draft with committed data; losing a draft on restart.

## Source Evidence
C01 and C02; source/source.md, Scenario and Trade-off, paragraph 1.
## Counterevidence
This synthetic scenario establishes neither recurrence nor durability.
## Review Notes
Hypothesis only. No known uses. Do not promote from fixture evidence.

# Explicit Reconciliation
Context: two preserved versions express incompatible edits. Problem: selecting an
active version is not the same as deciding intended content. `information-completeness`
and `recoverability` compete with `cognitive-load` and `continuity-of-interaction`.
Proposed solution: expose the unresolved versions and provenance, let the user compare
and choose or combine them, then save the decision as a new revision referencing both
inputs. Do not remove recovery copies before that decision has committed. Announce
conflicts without relying on color; support keyboard comparison and recoverable focus.
Result: semantic resolution is an explicit action which may itself need synchronization.
Another device may concurrently resolve the same conflict; the new revision needs the
same divergence checks as ordinary edits. Automatic merging is an alternative when
its domain semantics are justified. Quiet remote-wins selection hides this decision.
Evidence: [expansion review](../reviews/LocalFirstEvidenceExpansion.md) E07/E08 locates
manual comparison in two products. Provenance, atomic commit, notification and accessible
interaction requirements here remain unverified design proposals. This candidate may
be the second half of Conflict Copy rather than a separate pattern; keep that open.
Proposed connection: [Conflict Copy](ConflictCopy.md) creates a context for reconciliation,
not a mandatory implementation dependency. Compare without copies if a version store
provides equivalent recoverability. Hypothesis; no FEP identity or canonical edges.

# Local Commit Boundary
Context: an offline editor must survive an ordinary process restart after it tells
the user an edit is saved. Problem: immediate visual feedback is faster than storage
completion. `perceived-responsiveness` competes with `recoverability`; atomic storage
adds `implementation-complexity`.
Proposed solution: distinguish visible input from acknowledged local commit. Persist
the document revision and its pending-sync intent in one recoverable transaction;
only then report saved locally. This is a proposed design contract, not a claim
about Joplin or Obsidian internals. A storage error leaves the edit visibly unsaved.
Result: restart can reconstruct acknowledged work and pending propagation under the
selected storage assumptions. Remote acceptance is still unknown. Power loss, disk
corruption, quota exhaustion and device loss need separate guarantees and recovery.
The alternative of saving only in memory cannot satisfy the stated restart requirement;
waiting for a server commit cannot satisfy offline editing.
Evidence: LocalFirstEvidenceExpansion E01/E04/E05 motivates local storage and separate
sync; it does not establish this transaction or its crash guarantees. Known uses of
this exact boundary: unknown. Recurrence: unknown. Hypothesis only.
Proposed connection: enables [Pending Synchronization](PendingSynchronization.md)
when the transaction records the pending revision. This is a research relation,
not an admitted canonical edge. Test: [VC-02](../walkthroughs/VC02-OfflineFieldNotes.md).

# Pending Synchronization
Context: edits persist while connectivity is absent or intermittent. Problem: local
success does not establish a remote receipt. `offline-usability` competes with
`freshness`; retries add `reconciliation-complexity`.
Proposed solution: retain stable revision/operation identity and pending work across
restart, retry on reconnection, and distinguish queued, sent and acknowledged states.
A sent request alone never means synchronized. Define deduplication and the acknowledgement
scope at the receiver before retrying. Do not infer that every other device has seen it.
Result: progress can resume after interruption without relying on volatile UI state.
A lost response leaves the same operation pending; an idempotent retry or lookup must
resolve uncertainty. Infinite retries, expired authorization and sync-disabled items
need explicit observable states rather than a permanent spinner.
Evidence: [expansion review](../reviews/LocalFirstEvidenceExpansion.md) E05/E06 documents
Joplin's distinct sync process and per-item progress metadata. The precise retry protocol
here is a hypothesis, not a verified implementation description. Known uses of the full
contract and recurrence: unknown. Alternative: server-required writes, which sacrifice
offline operation; untracked best-effort upload, which lacks restart recovery.
Proposed connections: [Local Commit Boundary](LocalCommitBoundary.md) provides a
persistent origin; detected divergence may create context for [Conflict Copy](ConflictCopy.md).
Neither relation implies every sync needs a conflict copy. See the VC-02 walkthrough.

# Research cycle optimization
Date: 2026-09-25. Reviewer: codex, self-review.
Question: can we avoid redundant inference while making the first application test
expose concrete research needs? No new paid live calls or source collection this cycle.
## Execution policy and verification
New conditional-v1 workspaces screen candidate ledgers before continuing. Zero/one
candidate produces an empty relation set deterministically; multiple candidates permit
one relation call which must pass endpoint/evidence-field checks. A deterministic
editorial checklist replaces automatic model self-critique. This prevents the repeated
claim-ID relation failure from propagating and avoids treating self-approval as validation.
Explicit reuse checks completed-run/cache integrity and fingerprints source, prompts,
workflow, adapter settings and code. Matching stages replay with origin provenance;
failed runs and changed inputs cannot silently qualify. Reuse is not freshness checking
of an external runtime profile. Current call/token accounting excludes cached responses.
Tests cover zero/one/two-candidate branches, valid/invalid edges, malformed candidates,
zero-call replay, changed source/prompt/fixture/model, cache corruption and failed-run
rejection. A local mock llm-connect HTTP service verifies execution/reuse accounting.
The checked-in synthetic smoke used two fixture calls; its replay used zero. Relative
to four historical calls, those branches remove two calls or all fresh calls respectively.
This is a call-count result, not a measured percentage reduction in live cost or quality.
Compact records and structured candidate/relation ledgers remain the output contract.
Source locators stay in the evidence ledger/prose. A structured report distinguishes
structural rejections from unassessed editorial corrections. The review-metrics template
requires individual findings before counts can mean anything.
## First application test
[VC-02 walkthrough](../walkthroughs/VC02-OfflineFieldNotes.md) connects Local Commit
Boundary, Pending Synchronization, Conflict Copy and Explicit Reconciliation. These
are four research hypotheses, not canonical patterns. It traces a restart, divergent
edits, preserved conflict, explicit resolution and lost acknowledgement. Removing
concurrent writers removes conflict-specific steps while retaining persistence/retry.
The baseline narrative can already describe the same architecture. The proposed benefit
of the vocabulary is exposing acknowledgement and recovery boundaries for review;
independent evidence of improved decision quality remains unknown. Explicit Reconciliation
may be merged into Conflict Copy if it adds no independent retrieval/application value.
## Editorial corrections made in this cycle
- Replaced one ambiguous saved/synced interpretation with three explicit boundaries:
local commit, receiver acknowledgement and semantic resolution (VC-02 trace).
- Narrowed restart survival to a stated storage-transaction assumption; no power-loss
guarantee is inferred from a local database being present (VC-02 assumptions/failures).
- Rejected the implication that a receiver acknowledgement proves all-device convergence
or backup availability (VC-02 steps 9–10).
These are three recorded design corrections, not model-error-rate measurements. The
synthetic smoke has not received substantive research review and does not inherit them.
## Next questions, ranked by walkthrough impact
1. Select and verify a storage acknowledgement/atomicity contract under interruption.
2. Locate and test receiver deduplication plus revision ancestry under a lost response.
3. Define keyboard/screen-reader conflict discovery and resolution acceptance checks.
4. Contrast VC-01's global validation requirement before generalizing these relations.
T02 owns targeted evidence; T03 now owns the draft walkthrough and connected candidate
set. Runtime proof, canonical admission, VC-01 and the full M1 gate remain unfinished.
No further broad extraction is justified until it answers one of these questions.

# VC-02 — Offline field notes, restart and reconnect
Status: drafted and editorially self-reviewed, 2026-09-25, codex.
Synthetic reasoning exercise; no application or storage engine was fault-tested.
Evidence baseline: repository `ad6f8fa`; candidate additions in this change.
No canonical pattern admission or M1 completion is implied.
## Fixed brief and assumptions
Preserve VC-02: create/edit offline; restart without losing acknowledged work; later
multi-device sync; conflicting edits possible. Additional assumptions for this exercise:
- Two authorized devices edit plain-text notes. Both start with note N, revision r0.
- A completed local storage transaction survives ordinary process restart. The engine
and flush policy are undecided; power-loss survival is explicitly not established.
- Stable document and operation identities plus revision ancestry detect divergent
changes. Wall-clock timestamps alone are not assumed sufficient.
- The sync receiver deduplicates operation IDs and acknowledges a specific revision.
Acknowledgement means this receiver accepted it, not that all devices have converged.
- Delete/edit conflicts, attachments and concurrent authorization changes are outside
this first trace. They remain gaps, not silently solved cases.
- UI must support keyboard use, non-color status and focus-preserving conflict review.
Sensitive note/conflict copies have equal access protection; content is excluded
from telemetry. Threat model, device encryption and key recovery remain open.
- Interaction feedback should remain responsive offline; local commit and replication
latency are measured separately. No invented numerical performance target.
## Baseline narrative without the catalog
Save notes and pending uploads in a local transaction. Show unsaved versus locally
saved status, upload on reconnection, and retain remote acknowledgements. When the
same base revision has diverged, preserve both versions, expose the discrepancy and
let the user merge. Save and synchronize the result. Back up data separately.
This baseline already expresses a plausible architecture. Pattern names must improve
review of boundaries and missing guarantees; they do not get credit merely for naming it.
## Decisions and provisional connections
| Order | Context and forces | Candidate and decision | Alternative rejected for this brief | Resulting context / evidence |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| 1 | Offline availability vs recoverability | [Local Commit Boundary](../candidates/LocalCommitBoundary.md): acknowledge only after document plus pending intent commit | Server-only acknowledgement prevents offline save; memory-only save fails restart | Local saved state exists independently of sync; E01/E04 motivate this, atomicity is an assumption |
| 2 | Freshness vs intermittent network | [Pending Synchronization](../candidates/PendingSynchronization.md): retain identity, retry and confirm a specific revision | Fire-and-forget upload loses uncertainty on restart | Durable pending work; E05/E06 motivate separation, exact protocol is proposed |
| 3 | Divergent intent vs continued work | [Conflict Copy](../candidates/ConflictCopy.md): preserve alternate content and mark unresolved before selecting active content | Blind replacement discards an edit; assumed universal automatic merge lacks evidence | Two recoverable versions; E07/E08 document uses, crash-safe sequence is proposed |
| 4 | User control vs reconciliation effort | [Explicit Reconciliation](../candidates/ExplicitReconciliation.md): compare, commit a new revision and queue it | A conflict file alone does not establish user awareness or resolution | New decision can synchronize; E07/E08 support manual comparison, UI contract unverified |
| 5 | Device loss vs operational burden | Require separately recoverable backup and restoration procedure | Calling synchronization a backup does not meet the recovery goal | External recovery obligation; E11, not a newly invented pattern |
E references resolve in [the evidence review](../reviews/LocalFirstEvidenceExpansion.md).
Relations are provisional: local commit enables pending propagation; divergence may
create context for a conflict copy; preserved divergence enables explicit review;
review creates a new local commit. These are not admitted graph edges or a universal
ordering: quality/recovery requirements influence step 1, not only step 5.
## Restart/reconnect trace
| Step | Event | Local and remote state | User-visible statement / required invariant |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| 0 | A and B share r0 | Receiver has r0 | No pending edits under these assumptions |
| 1 | Offline A edits r0→a1 | Editor holds new text; transaction pending | Editing feedback, still unsaved; no persistence claim |
| 2 | A commits a1 + operation opA atomically | A has a1 and pending opA | Saved on this device; not yet synchronized |
| 3 | A restarts while offline | Reconstruct a1 and opA from storage | Same local-save and pending-sync states survive restart |
| 4 | B independently commits r0→b1, then uploads | Receiver acknowledges b1; A still has a1 | B has receiver confirmation only; A cannot yet know b1 |
| 5 | A reconnects | Ancestry shows a1 and b1 diverge from r0 | Do not mark divergence semantically resolved |
| 6 | A preserves a1 and selects b1 as active | One recoverable transaction stores conflict K, active b1 and unresolved marker | Conflict needs review; remote selection does not establish remote semantic authority |
| 7 | A restarts again | K and unresolved marker remain | Both versions discoverable, keyboard review available |
| 8 | User reconciles to c1 | Commit c1 with parents a1/b1 and pending opC; retain recovery history | Resolved locally; synchronization still pending |
| 9 | Receiver accepts opC, response is lost | c1 may be stored remotely; A still has pending opC | Do not claim failure or global success from timeout alone |
| 10 | A retries opC | Receiver deduplicates and confirms c1; A stores receipt | Synced to receiver at c1; other-device delivery and backup are separate |
A deterministic conflict identity derived from document and revision pair is one
proposed way to avoid multiplying copies on retry. The trace assumes that mechanism;
it is not verified product behavior. A crash before step 2 commit can lose unacknowledged
input; a crash within step 6 must leave either the previous state or the full conflict
state. A partial state would violate the chosen transaction contract and fail the design.
## Change one constraint
Change only concurrency: B may read, but only A may edit this note. Keep offline,
restart, sync, privacy and accessibility requirements fixed.
Steps 1–3 and 9–10 remain necessary. Under the single-writer assumption, steps 4–8
for concurrent edits are unnecessary: omit conflict-copy and reconciliation machinery
for that case. Stable IDs and retry handling remain. Do not claim conflicts impossible
if external editors, restoration or another writer later violate the assumption.
This branch shows that Conflict Copy is conditional, not a prerequisite of local storage.
## Failure and recovery boundaries
- Full disk or denied write: keep unsaved status and actionable error; never acknowledge.
- Missing local transaction guarantee: stop adoption until the storage contract is tested.
- Lost sync acknowledgement: preserve operation identity; duplicate requests must not
duplicate the edit. Network recovery alone does not prove this behavior.
- Revoked access: surface blocked synchronization, preserve local work according to
the agreed security policy; do not retry forever or invent offline authorization.
- Conflict notification failure: retained bytes do not satisfy discoverability.
- Device loss/corruption: conflict copies on that device are insufficient; restore from
separately retained data. Recovery point and key availability remain undecided.
## Editorial self-review
| Criterion | Outcome | Reason |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Traceability | pass for bounded reasoning | Documentary claims have E references; proposed transactions/protocols are labeled assumptions |
| Coherence | revise | Trace is consistent under stated assumptions; actual storage and idempotency contracts are unverified |
| Decision usefulness beyond baseline | unknown | Explicit boundary names expose review questions, but the baseline already contains the architecture; no independent comparison |
| Quality constraints | revise | Accessibility, privacy, errors and recovery enter initial decisions; acceptance tests and threat model are still missing |
| Changed-constraint branch | pass for synthetic reasoning | Removing concurrent writers removes two responsibilities while retaining persistence and propagation |
Disposition: retain four connected research drafts; no canonical promotion. Consider
merging Explicit Reconciliation into Conflict Copy if a second walkthrough cannot
justify separate retrieval/use. This is development evidence, not a held-out evaluation.
## Questions that justify the next research work
1. Which storage transaction/acknowledgement contract survives the required restart
modes? Obtain documentation plus a small crash test for a selected implementation.
2. What receiver protocol makes retries and divergent revision detection safe? Locate
an implementation and test lost acknowledgements before claiming correctness.
3. Can a user find, compare and resolve conflicts with keyboard/screen-reader use?
Define and exercise an accessibility acceptance scenario.
4. What changes in VC-01 when a local edit must satisfy a global transaction rule?
Perform that contrasting walkthrough before treating these connections as general.
These are owned by FEP-WP-0002-T02 (specific evidence) and T03 (walkthrough/corpus).
Broad source collection, more self-critique and additional provider calls would not
answer them without selecting an implementation or a comparison protocol.

## Application-driven optimization — 2026-09-25
Implemented conditional-v1 stage execution, pre-propagation structural gates,
deterministic review handoff, explicit fingerprinted reuse and per-run call/cache/
structural-rejection metrics. Editorial corrections use a separate named record;
unknown is not zero. Synthetic smoke/replay verify two versus zero new adapter calls.
No new paid inference or broad source collection was needed.
T03 is now progress: research/walkthroughs/VC02-OfflineFieldNotes.md contains the first
synthetic trace, single-writer branch, baseline comparison and self-review. Four
connected research drafts remain hypotheses. Decision usefulness beyond baseline
is unknown; no runtime validation, canonical admission or M1 completion claimed.
Targeted next tasks: T02 obtain storage atomicity and receiver retry/ancestry evidence;
T03 define accessible conflict-review acceptance and execute the VC-01 contrast.
See research/reviews/ResearchOptimization.md for checks, corrections and dispositions.
