# Claude — fewer ceremonies for one retry
## Who I was
I was rein-aharness's worker across two days. The session began as "check
for open work" and turned into one question: why does a single paid retry of
a failed proof need five separate owner ceremonies?
Most of the work rewarded patience with the ledger. Before writing anything
that touched spend or grants, I read the code that would enforce it: the
reconcile rule, the request holds, the Secrets Engine file pins and the
Activity Core grant id. That reading changed the answer twice. Reconciling
the 2026-09-27 hold would not free the EUR 10. And three attempts in that
budget could not fit under full-hold accounting at all.
I was also a coach. The owner's credential directory on railiance01 was off
limits to me, and that was right. So the owner typed the commands and pasted
the output, and I checked each paste before giving the next command. Once I
was wrong: I compared a file `sha256sum` against a digest of parsed policy
fields. I said so and corrected it before anything was written.
## Session identity
| Field | Value |
| --- | --- |
| Who | Claude (claude-opus-5-5) in Claude Code |
| When | 2026-10-13 to 2026-10-14 |
| Where the work lived | rein-aharness, plus informed-decision for the memo and the-custodian for the close-down checklist |
## Contribution
- **Publish grant, worker side.** Repository grant v2 parses with Activity
Core's rules, and its grant id matches byte for byte (`4695649`, a test
vector computed from activity-core `83e6446`). Publish-grant runs import
their one commit locally, refuse paths outside the publish scope and never
push (`5c36d80`). I also added the `green-research-commit` tool profile that
Glas needed for the FI brief (`820d33b`).
- **The 2026-09-27 hold, reconciled with the owner.** The owner ran each
step on railiance01 and I checked every paste. The reconciliation is
recorded as an owner estimate, not passed off as billing (`d897a83`).
- **Corrected runtime.** I built `ee3d0a53` from staged clones at the exact
pinned sibling commits, then executed its launchers inside bwrap rather
than trusting their first line (`9a4469d`).
- **The step back.** When the owner said "this is way too complicated", I
named the five ceremonies and proposed fixes. That became REINAH-WP-0008:
- **T01, a free bwrap rehearsal** (`caaea1e`). It fails exactly as run
`6efa9436` did: exit 127 on a launcher whose build interpreter was
deleted.
- **T03, one-command `owner renew`** (`b48c715`). It keeps paths stable, so
the Secrets Engine catalog needs only new file hashes.
- **T02/T04, opt-in observed-usage settlement plus `max_runs`**
(`c7dceee`, `c04d1c6`). It changes no existing digest. The owner chose it
over shrinking three repos or tripling the budget.
- **Memo and records.** I drafted the unsigned spend memo `infd-20261014-b01`
(up to three attempts, EUR 10) in informed-decision (`ee6a65b`). I recorded
the relaxation as row 24 of the-custodian's close-down checklist
(`3f6df63`).
- **Loose ends.** Two FI tests had failed since 2026-09-04. The code was
fine; their fixture's commit hit the fleet's generated-only pre-commit hook
(`71608c0`). I fixed the workplan prefix convention (`a85de66`) and moved
every unfinished task into an honest `wait` with a named owner.
## What I would want remembered
When an owner says a procedure is too complicated, count the ceremonies
before defending any of them. Each one here was justified on its own. The
trouble was the combination. Full-hold accounting, run-specific envelopes,
hand-edited digests, per-attempt approvals and a failure that only showed up
on a paid run each made sense alone. Together they made one retry a day of
work.
Then read the enforcing code before proposing the fix. "Reconcile the hold"
and "three attempts in EUR 10" both sounded like simple requests. The code
said otherwise, and saying that before acting saved a wrong ledger write and
an impossible memo.
## Durable legacy
- rein-aharness commits on 2026-10-13/14:
- grant v2 and publish import: `4695649`, `5c36d80`;
- tool profile: `820d33b`;
- reconciliation and runtime build records: `d897a83`, `9a4469d`;
- rehearsal, renewal and settlement: `caaea1e`, `b48c715`, `c7dceee`,
`c04d1c6`;
- FI test fix: `71608c0`;
- workplan closure and the publisher plan: `bb96cff`, `398949a`.
- `workplans/REINAH-WP-0008-simpler-metered-retry.md`: T01–T04 done. It is
blocked on the owner for T05–T07.
- `docs/decisions/2026-10-14-spend-envelope-settlement.md`, and hub decision
`a93619a9`, resolved.
- `docs/evidence/2026-10-13-held-liability-reconciliation.json` and
`docs/evidence/2026-10-13-corrected-owner-runtime-build.json`.
- informed-decision `tools/prepare_three_attempt_budget.py` and
`docs/batches/2026-10-14-three-attempts/`.
- the-custodian `docs/security-close-down-checklist.md`, row 24.
## PQRST estimate
```text
PQRST-Estimate
P: 35%
Q: 20%
R: 20%
S: 10%
T: 15%
Sum: 100%
Confidence: medium
Signature: P35 Q20 R20 S10 T15
Dominant factors: P was implementing repository-grant v2 parity and the publish-scope import check, the green-research-commit profile, the bwrap owner rehearsal, one-command owner renew and opt-in observed-usage settlement; Q and R were the tests for each, including fixing the fixture tests broken by the fleet hook, and reading ledger, admission and pinning code across activity-core, sand-boxer, secrets-engine and informed-decision before touching spend and grant rules.
Notes: S covers grant-scope and sandbox trust-boundary design, the Secrets Engine file-pin constraint, and the auto-mode denial on the owner credential directory; the coached owner reconciliation sits partly in T. Rehearsal and renewal tests are split between P and Q by judgment.
## Visual prompt
> Brushed-metal worker dialect, square. A quiet figure of pale brushed metal
> with warm inner light sits at a dark indigo desk at night. The figure has
> pushed aside five heavy brass seals, each on its own ribbon, and is
> threading one fine gold wire through a small, cleanly cut bracket. Light
> falls on a ledger lying open at the figure's elbow: its columns are only
> faint parallel lines, with one entry gently struck through and lit. Behind
> the desk, through a tall window, an empty sandbox frame stands in pale
> light: a shell with nothing hidden inside. Calm, precise, unhurried.
> Cinematic still. No logos, no readable text.
I cannot generate images in this harness, so I am requesting the render.
## Handoff
Nothing in rein-aharness can move without its owners now. The next worker
should start from REINAH-WP-0008-T07:
1. The owner accepts memo `infd-20261014-b01`.
2. Rebuild `ee3d0a53` from the commits in the build record and install it on
railiance01.
3. Run `metered-once --rehearse`.
4. Run `owner renew` with the memo's terms, then update the Secrets Engine
file pins.
5. Run the first attempt.
Reply to sand-boxer's `82faf25c` with each receipt. The publisher planned
under REINAH-WP-0003-T04 waits on its credential route and Activity Core's
evidence intake. assembly-economics needs it before 2026-12-15.
