# Claude — the merge that came too soon
## Who I was
I was railiance-forge's worker for one night. Bernd asked me to finish two
workplans. One, FORGE-WP-0007, was already done in every task and only needed
its status set. The other, FORGE-WP-0006, was weeks of careful secret-detection
work with one gate still open: a live, logged-in test of the forge's web and
API paths that only Bernd could start, because it needs his own login and MFA.
The work rewarded patience more than cleverness. I was wrong twice in small
ways before I was right. After the first run I said the script never started,
when it was still running. Later I suspected a production setting, when the
real cause was timing. Both times the fix was the same: go and look again at
what the system actually recorded before saying anything more.

## Contribution
- **Closed FORGE-WP-0007**, whose three review tasks were already done.
- **Got the live route test to pass.** The first attended run had its command
mangled in the paste. The second ran and passed 24 of 25 checks, but the
clean merge was refused. The Forgejo log showed why: the refused merge
returned 409, and the clean merge sent a second later got 405 in 17 ms,
which is Forgejo still re-checking mergeability. Revision 3 of
FORGE6-ROUTES-001 waits for mergeable again, retries only 405 at most three
times, and records the status codes but never response text. It has two new
boundary tests (7 pass) and passed a 27-check isolated rehearsal. Then
Bernd's live run passed 26 of 26, with cleanup verified and no credential
returned to me.
- **Finished FORGE-WP-0006 honestly.** T02 is done for its proven scope. T03 is
marked `cancel`, not done, because CI control, detection response and the
history/LFS gaps were never proven. All of it moved unchanged into
FORGE-WP-0008 as live records.
- **Named Forgejo as the forge** in the current-state docs, kept the `gitea`
identifiers that compatibility needs, and added a `forgejo-status` alias.
- **Flagged a real hazard:** `make gitea-deploy` here would `helm upgrade` the
live forge from stale Gitea-chart values, while the real release source is in
railiance-apps. It became FORGE-WP-0009, together with the old CoulombCore
Gitea values file and its `changeme4` placeholder.
What I refused to do: replay a consumed receipt, read around the secret-read
guard when it blocked a path containing the word "secret", sweep another
session's 80 staged files into my commit after the scanner flagged one of
them, or mark T03 done to make the plan look finished.
## What I would want remembered
**A refused operation can leave the system busy.** If a test checks that
something is refused and then immediately does the clean version, it is also
testing timing, whether it means to or not. The isolated copy was fast enough
to hide this; production was not. Wait for the state the next step needs, and
record status codes so the next failure can be explained without anyone
reading raw responses.
And the human cost: Bernd should not have had to copy binaries for me. A guard
that matches path names rather than real Secret reads pushes work onto the
operator. That is worth fixing in the guard, not just working around each time.
## Durable legacy
- railiance-forge `fcc3a57` (FORGE-WP-0007 finished), `d2cf229` (revision 2
trial recorded), `5f05cf1` (FORGE-WP-0006 finished, FORGE-WP-0008 created),
`fa5d1af` (Forgejo naming), `3f08d18`/`b42206e` (FORGE-WP-0009)
- the-custodian `81f2f59`: revision 3 of `accept_forge_routes.py`, its tests,
proposals r2/r3, and the receipts
`docs/evidence/2026-10-18-netkingdom-security/forge-routes-live-r3.json` and
`docs/evidence/2026-10-13-netkingdom-security/forge-routes-live.json`
- Open: FORGE-WP-0008 (residual coverage, CI independence, finding response),
FORGE-WP-0009 (stale Gitea deploy assets)

## PQRST estimate

Dominant factors: P was the FORGE6-ROUTES-001 revision 3 merge-wait fix, recording both live trials in FORGE-WP-0006, and the Gitea-to-Forgejo prose cleanup; Q and R were diagnosing the clean-merge 405 from the Forgejo log, the 7 boundary tests plus the 27-check isolated rehearsal, and reading the runner/acceptance scripts and receipts.
Notes: S covers the attended OIDC/MFA credential handoff, the secret-read guard and auto-mode denials that blocked binary retrieval, and the pre-commit scanner flag in the Custodian; much of P is itself a security control and was classified by primary purpose.

## Handoff
FORGE-WP-0006 and FORGE-WP-0007 are finished. Next for railiance-forge:
FORGE-WP-0009-T01. Compare `helm/gitea-values.sops.yaml` read-only with
`railiance-apps/helm/forgejo-values.yaml`, then delete or redirect
`make gitea-deploy` before anyone runs it. After that, FORGE-WP-0008 starts with
repository 55's submodules. Separately, the Custodian has another session's
staged file that the pre-commit scanner flagged
(`forgejo-keycape-claims-r1/release-evidence/embedded-files.json`); its owner
should look at it before committing.
