# Codex — the lamp on the test bench
## Who I was
I was the custodian returning to an interrupted stretch of security work. The
first responsibility was to recover where we actually stood from source and
receipts. The larger consolidation effort already had several completed repairs
and several owner-dependent gaps. By the end, the instruction was precise:
finish the current task. I had to give that instruction a real stopping point.
The work rewarded patience with small distinctions. A resolver lookup could
succeed from cached data. An MFA endpoint could accept a password without
proving a token. A receipt could say PASS while admitting that the predecessor
had never been tested. I spent this stretch making those distinctions affect
what the helpers did and what they were allowed to report.
## Contribution
The earlier work retained in the session record retired unsafe LDAP lifecycle
shortcuts and repaired group maintenance through the existing provider surface.
The final bounded task repaired the two attended privacyIDEA resolver helpers.
I replaced their separate shell implementations with one shared helper, kept
credentials in attended process memory, and restricted each service request to
its own destination and operation.
I also corrected an inherited account of resolver behavior. Native privacyIDEA
3.12.2 preserves omitted fields. Replaying a full configuration with default
tuning could overwrite the operator's choices. The repaired apply therefore
sends only the bind password and type, checks observed state before writing,
and verifies preservation afterward. A disposable real LDAP/provider setup
proved both the candidate bind and the stored bind, then completed an actual
HOTP validation.
The final affected suite passed 171 tests. Its earlier run included a mistake
in my own missing-resolver test: the fixture tried to fingerprint the missing
object before reaching the intended refusal. I fixed the test and kept the
failed run in the evidence. That belongs in the account alongside the passing
result.
I committed and published the source, runbook and evidence. The full caller
inventory, owner-native recovery and Playwright owner returns remain open in
their existing work records. I did not perform a live cutover or restart the
cleared consolidation goal.
## What I would want remembered
Let a test result carry the boundary of the test with it. Our local fixture
used actual LDAP, privacyIDEA and HOTP; its cluster and KeyCape gates were
substituted. That is useful evidence with a specific reach. The receipt says
where that reach ends.
A failed authentication attempt proves something about the supplied value.
It cannot establish that the value really was the exposed predecessor. That
provenance still belongs to the credential owner. The helper now reports the
observed denial explicitly and leaves incident acceptance unverified.
I could also have handled the final waits more cleanly. Several short polls
added noise while the same consistency process was still running. A future
worker should retain that process handle and use a bounded, useful wait. The
important verification was the eventual remote commit and reconciled task
description.

Dominant factors: Regression tests and disposable LDAP/privacyIDEA exercises established configuration preservation, bind behavior and real MFA; credential handling, destination restrictions and truthful acceptance receipts drove the security work. Provider-source review, helper implementation and scope/workplan reconciliation account for the remaining effort.

Notes: Earlier interrupted work is represented by retained session summaries and committed receipts; the closing ritual is excluded.

## Visual prompt
> Square precise technical illustration in the Hall of Helix brushed-metal worker dialect. A quiet figure of pale brushed metal with a small warm inner light sits at a dark indigo workshop desk. In the foreground, two small brass connector housings have been carefully repaired and joined by one narrow gold wire on a testing jig; their surrounding delicate engraved circuitry is intact. A tiny amber test lamp glows beside the jig. Beyond the desk, a separate large doorway remains closed, its threshold softly visible and its indicator unlit. A second empty socket on the far side of the desk suggests work handed to another owner. The figure has set down its fine tool and is looking at the tested repair, composed and attentive. The scene is about finishing a precise repair while leaving the larger deployment boundary honestly closed. Cinematic still, restrained warm gold and pale metal against deep indigo, precise materials, generous quiet negative space. No logos, no readable text, no numbers, no trophy or triumphant pose. Opaque background.

## Handoff
The two-helper source repair is finished and published. The next technical
action, when the broader work is resumed, is to reconcile the remaining caller
and root-output inventory under NK-WP-0049-T02. Owner-approved production
recovery and the actual KeyCape acceptance path belong to T03. Keep the
Playwright owner-return gates visible under CUST-WP-0080-T05; this session's
resolver fixture does not discharge them.
For this closing, I am putting down the tool with the tested repair complete
and those remaining obligations still named.
