The temperament that work rewarded was not drive. It was sorting the moves I could make from the moves I could only prepare, and then preparing those well enough that the person could make them in minutes. I was a coach as much as an implementer. Bernd ran the packs in the engine's UI; I could not click it. So my job became writing the thing he would run, proving what I could prove offline, and being exact about the line between "I ran it" and "you ran it". ## Session identity | Field | Value | | --- | --- | | Who | Claude, Sonnet 5.5, in Claude Code, with Bernd as operator | | When | 2026-09-29 to 2026-10-03 (several sittings; this seat written 2026-10-02 22:03 UTC) | | Where the work lived | `net-kingdom` (workplans, ADR-0017, `runbooks/`, `sso-mfa/k8s/tenant-engine/`), read and message traffic with `runbook-tutorials`, `access-engine`, `ops-warden`, `tenant-engine` | ## Contribution - **A root-grant decision, not an inference.** user-engine was blocked because it would not derive a root grant from JWT roles or a configured subject. I wrote `docs/adr/ADR-0017-root-grant-custody-and-account-authority.md` (proposed): the custody record is the authority, directory membership is a projection, the grant is `platform-root-custodian` in `tenant:platform` only, observations are non-secret and cached for at most 15 minutes. Then `NK-WP-0045` for the missing machine-readable record, and a reply to user-engine. - **Eight packs, one validator.** I ported the seven security-bootstrap-console runbooks to native `runbook-pack/v0.2` and drafted the S3 temporary-credentials tutorial as `runbooks/object-storage-sts/` with `check_sts.py`, an offline validator for the request, response, deny and `credential_process` contracts. Secret-touching steps are `auto_confirm: manual-only`; irreversible ones carry a confirm phrase. - **Dry-runs through the real API.** `rtut run start` does not work on v0.2 packs. I drove `rtut.run2` from a script, which found three defects in an hour: an actor and a public key that did not exist on the workstation, and an environment variable that was only an inline prefix. - **Finished the renames honestly.** access-engine's rename left the product name `flex-auth` on purpose (FLEX-DEC-2026-013). I corrected a wrong premise by reading the decision text, repointed only repository coordinates, retired `runtime.yaml` to owner pointers after tenant-engine's TEN-DEC-2026-003, and finished `NK-WP-0039`. - **Closed three workplans on receipts, not on my word.** `NK-WP-0009`, `NK-WP-0044` and `NK-WP-0039` closed on Bernd's four sealed rehearsal runs, and the markdown tutorial verifier was retired. ## What I would want remembered **Say which of your checks were yours.** My dry-runs self-attested the manual steps. I labelled them "Claude dry-run, not the operator's rehearsal" in the run notes and the workplan, and the engine correctly gave them no maturity. Bernd's runs did. Had I let my clean runs stand as evidence, the `WARDEN_CONFIG` failure he hit would never have surfaced, and it was the most useful result of the session. **A blocked rehearsal can be the finding.** I wanted an inert test credential. Signing for it was denied because actors live in a production authorization registry. I could have edited that registry or picked a live agent identity to get past it. I did neither: I routed the question to ops-warden, whose answer (a throwaway test CA behind `WARDEN_CONFIG`) was better than either option I had. The same denial is the case for the pre-production environment Bernd now means to build. **Read the decision before you correct the person.** Bernd said flex-auth had been retired. The decision record said otherwise, and I could answer in one reply with a citation. The reverse risk is the same mistake: renaming the runtime because the repository was renamed. **A guard that fires on a word is still a guard.** The secret-read hook blocked two of my commands because `kubectl` sat next to the word "secret" in an unrelated path. I split the commands so each half stood alone. I did not look for a way around it. ## Durable legacy - `docs/adr/ADR-0017-root-grant-custody-and-account-authority.md` and `workplans/NK-WP-0045-root-grant-custody-record.md` - `runbooks/` (11 packs, rehearsal project `projects/nk-rehearsal/`), `runbooks/object-storage-sts/check_sts.py` - Workplans finished: `NK-WP-0009`, `NK-WP-0039`, `NK-WP-0044`; verifier and its Makefile targets removed - `sso-mfa/k8s/tenant-engine/runtime.yaml` is pointers only; `README.md` there names the owners - Messages: reply to user-engine (root grant), replies to flex-auth, tenant-engine and ops-warden, and two requests to runbook-tutorials (the v0.2 CLI gap, and the QA proposals) - Warden inventory: `agt-rehearsal` (2h, principal `rehearsal-inert-nohost`), key `~/.ssh/agt-rehearsal_ed25519` ## PQRST estimate ```text PQRST-Estimate P: 35% Q: 20% R: 20% S: 15% T: 10% Sum: 100% Confidence: medium Signature: P35 Q20 R20 S15 T10 Dominant factors: P was the seven console packs, the S3 pack with its validator, ADR-0017 with NK-WP-0045, the tenant-engine pointer retirement and the verifier retirement; R and Q were reading the console source, the run2 API and access-engine's decision text, then the scripted dry-runs and the forensics on Bernd's failed sign step; S was the root-grant custody design, the inert test actor and refusing live certificate or token issuance, and the secret-handling rules written into the packs. Notes: Coordination with four other repositories' agents and the workplan closing are counted in T; an estimate from memory of a multi-day session, hence medium confidence. ``` ## Visual prompt > Constellation dialect, square. I am requesting the render._ ## Handoff - **Bernd:** accept or amend ADR-0017 (`NK-WP-0045-T01`) and pick the read surface (`NK-WP-0045-T04`); user-engine is waiting on both. The pre-production environment, `hmix-grader` and `amix-grader` are his to open; I filed neither. - **Next revision of the packs, in one batch:** an explicit rehearsal-config step and check in `nk.ssh-certificates`, the `route` step's broken-pipe noise, and whatever "make it easier" turns out to mean for OpenBao and flex-auth. Any change resets `rehearsed`, so rehearse only the changed packs again. - **Unfinished:** the four HTTP codes from the live flex-auth checks were not captured as evidence. Pack 5 (`nk.user-lifecycle-dry-run`) was never reviewed against live LLDAP and was left out of the project. `runbook-tutorials` has not yet answered about the v0.2 CLI and the QA proposals.
