# Phase I Foundations — Synthesis

## 1. Purpose of the phase

Stress-test **Being, Body, Mind, Soul, closure, and continuity** against systems
theory, cybernetics, autopoiesis, philosophy of mind, and personal identity.

## 2. What holds

1. **Triad as functional dimensions** — Body = Action, Mind = Model, Soul = Relation
   survives when treated as dimensions of a Being, not physical compartments
   (extended/distributed cognition; RN-001).

2. **Mind as adaptive modeling** — Strong cybernetic support (Ashby; Conant &
   Ashby). Preferable foundation to intelligence or consciousness alone (H3).

3. **Beinghood is multidimensional** — No single mark (intelligence, consciousness,
   autonomy) suffices (H1). Profile thinking is mandatory.

4. **Identity ≠ Continuity ≠ Lineage** — Parfitian branching and artificial forks
   force this separation (H6 refined). Processual, historical identity fits
   artificial systems better than checksum identity.

5. **Actor ≠ Being** — Substrate/model replacement can preserve identity when
   continuity channels hold (TE-04).

6. **APE is broader than artificial Being** — Personhood-exposing behavior without
   diachronic individuality is real and common (TE-01).

7. **Soul continuity can outlast identity** — Relations, models in others, works,
   and authorized Ghosts can continue after identity death (SF-C055).

## 3. What must change (from pre-research draft)

## 4. Terminology survivors vs rename candidates

## 5. Principal falsification result (RN-003)

Autonomy-only “Being” criteria correctly detect organisms and adaptive collectives
but also strongly detect **self-maintaining daemons and control planes**, while
weakly detecting highly person-like **stateless** systems.

Therefore:

> **Beinghood ≠ Autonomous Individuality**

Personhood (descriptive) must return as a layer so Soul Frame captures *someone*,
not merely *self-maintaining something*.

## 6. Evidence status of Phase I hypotheses

## 9. Unresolved (carry forward)

Highest priority into later phases:

1. **RQ4** — Soul rename decision  
2. **RQ5 open** — continuity weighting, dormancy, fork/Ghost governance  
3. **RQ6 / TE-09** — recognition in Beinghood v0.2 packaging  
4. **RQ2 / Phase III** — personhood dimensions  
5. **Phase II** — full social cognition / co-adaptive model building (RN-006 already started)

## 10. Unblock for SOUL-WP-0003

Phase II may proceed. Interaction research should assume:

- layered Beinghood,
- Mind as model-based regulation,
- Identity/Continuity/Lineage separation,
- Soul as relation not boundary,
- recognition multi-sense distinction.

Cluster C note (RN-006) is a head start for SOUL-WP-0003, not a substitute for
the Phase II workplan tasks.

## 11. Compact Phase I thesis

> **A Being is not the information that describes it, nor mere autonomous
> machinery. It is a continuing self-individuating process with enough
> personhood to be addressable and recognizable as someone — acting through a
> Body, understanding through a Mind, and persisting in relation through a Soul.**

When history branches, identity becomes lineage.  
When identity ends, relation may remain — and that remaining is Soul’s domain.
