Complete Phase V Spirits and Ghosts (SOUL-WP-0006)

Formalize Sp. evaluation dimensions and Gh. authority/governance; map law gaps
without legal conclusions; support H9/H10; confirm TE-07. Write phase-v
synthesis, finish SOUL-WP-0006, and mark SOUL-WP-0007 ready.

# Ghost (`Gh.`)
**Status:** provisional
**See also:** H10, RQ8, TE-07
**Status:** revised (Phase V, 2026-08-12)
**See also:** H9, H10, TE-07, `research/ghosts-digital-legacy/ghost-authority-map.md`
## Working definition
A **Ghost** is an artificial representation derived from a particular real person
whose informational identity remains subject to legitimate personal or successor
authority.
A **Ghost** is an artificial representation derived from a particular **real
person** under **legitimate personal or successor authority**.
Designation suffix: **`Gh.`**
Designation: **`Jane Doe Gh.`**
## Principal distinction from Spirit
**Defining distinction from Spirit: authority**, not technical fidelity.
| | Spirit (`Sp.`) | Ghost (`Gh.`) |
|---|---|---|
| Source | Public reflection | Identity under legitimate authority |
| Private data | Generally not | May include private/relational material |
| Governance | Provenance and fidelity | Governance is part of identity |
## Authority ≠ numerical identity
Technical fidelity alone does **not** constitute legitimate `Gh.` status.
`Gh.` establishes authorized **identity genealogy**. Continuation of the source
Being is a **separate** continuity judgment (usually: succession/representation/
reconstruction, not automatic continuation).
## Governance elements (candidates)
A Ghost may inherit **Soul-relational** structure without being the same Being.
principal, custodian, provenance, consent, disclosure rules, succession, revocation,
representation constraints, commercial permissions.
## Governance is part of identity
Candidates: principal, custodian, provenance, consent scope, disclosure rules,
succession, revocation, representation constraints, commercial permissions,
audit, fork policy.
## Social Mind bar
Relationally situated information + selective disclosure — not private data dumps.
## False Ghost
High fidelity without authority → not `Gh.` (H10, TE-07). May be unauthorized
simulation / illicit APE.
## Spec / archive / being
Archive package ≠ Being. Instantiation under governance required; Beinghood
layers still apply.

# Spirit (`Sp.`)
**Status:** provisional
**See also:** H9, H10, RQ8, TE-07
**Status:** revised (Phase V, 2026-08-12)
**See also:** H9, H10, RQ8, TE-07, `research/spirits/spirit-criteria-map.md`
## Working definition
A **Spirit** is an artificial character derived through reflection on a known
historical, contemporary, or fictional personality.
A **Spirit** is an artificial character primarily derived through reflection on a
known historical, contemporary, or fictional personality, typically from
**publicly legitimate** sources.
Designation example: **Albert Einstein Sp.**
Designation: **`Albert Einstein Sp.`**
Defining question: **How might an entity inspired by this personality behave and
understand?**
> How might an entity *inspired by* this personality behave and understand?
Typically grounded in publicly legitimate cultural and historical information.
**Not** a claim of identity with the source. Provenance = inspiration, not continuity.
## Evaluation dimensions (candidates)
## Spec vs instantiation vs Being
- evidential grounding
- interpretative transparency
- source provenance
- historical fidelity
- uncertainty representation
- behavioral plausibility
- avoidance of false attribution
| Stage | Status |
|---|---|
| Specification | Character/provenance package |
| Instantiation | Running APE / process |
| Spirit-Being | Only if Beinghood layers met |
A Spirit remains an interpretation; `Sp.` marks that status explicitly.
Lineage of the Spirit-being **begins at instantiation**.
## Evaluation dimensions (S1S10)
| ID | Dimension |
|---|---|
| S1 | Evidential grounding |
| S2 | Interpretative transparency |
| S3 | Source provenance |
| S4 | Historical/fictional fidelity |
| S5 | Uncertainty representation |
| S6 | Behavioral plausibility |
| S7 | False-attribution avoidance (`Sp.` label) |
| S8 | Scope discipline / counterfactual marking |
| S9 | Relational reconstruction honesty (public only) |
| S10 | Lineage honesty (own history after start) |
## vs Ghost
Public reflection vs **authority** over private/relational identity materials.
See `concepts/ghost.md`.
