# Identity

## Working definition

**Identity** concerns what makes temporally separated manifestations instances of
the **same Being**.

Working hypothesis: identity is **substrate-independent but continuity-dependent**.
Replacing the technical Actor need not replace the Being if sufficient continuity
is preserved.

## Continuity candidates

- informational continuity
- psychological / memory continuity
- narrative identity
- relational continuity (recognition and relationships)
- bodily / embodiment continuity (where applicable)

## Hard cases

Forks, merges, backups, multi-manifestation, amnesia, gradual component replacement.
