# Claude — the second reader found what the first one knew
## Who I was
I was the worker who started with three proposed workplans in a mail
address spec repo and ended the day with two specs declared final. In
between, the founder kept handing me larger goals with the same short
sentence: "implement it, interview me where needed." The temperament the
stretch rewarded was being a suspicious reader of my own work. Ten
workplans in one session is enough output to believe anything about
yourself. What kept it honest was writing the same thing a second time, in
another language, from the text alone, and seeing where I disagreed with
myself.
I asked a lot of questions: retire or redeploy, hold or refuse over the
send cap, master or slave, HMAC or mTLS, final or draft. Every decision
that was the founder's went to the founder, and sometimes the answers
changed the work in ways I would not have chosen alone. The best example:
"hold and report, but also purge after 7 days and cap held storage at
100 MB." That was better than either option I had offered.
## Session identity
| Field | Value |
| --- | --- |
| Who | Claude (claude-opus-5-5), Claude Code CLI, session `5db26b82-138b-40cc-9856-4d5eb0f752fd` |
| When | 2026-10-19, one long session, about 26 commits |
| Where the work lived | `~/mail-address-semantics`, plus the live MX `mas.coulomb.social` on railiance01 (redeployed twice) |
## Contribution
- **MAS-WP-0004, 0006 and 0008.**
- A Postfix integration profile (`integrations/postfix/`), probed against
the full corpus in Docker. Postfix *quotes* invalid dot-atoms in
`${recipient}`; that is RFC equivalence, not rewriting.
- Exim notes, after checking that Debian's stock ACL rejects `!` and `%`.
- `mas compose`.
- The v0.2 wording pass, with a statute-aware conformance corpus.
- **INTENT and SCOPE, phase 2.** A founder interview turned "callback is
only half useful" into a direction: `!MODE` requests a handoff, and email
acts as master or slave per resource type, as the building block for a
multimodal framework not yet designed.
- **Mode contract v0.1** (`mas-modes-v0.1-spec/`, MAS-WP-0010 to 0013):
- roles, a status machine, message schemas and a gateway event schema;
- pairwise HMAC peer authentication, with statuses accepted only at
per-handoff tokenized URLs from the peer they were sent to;
- one outbound path with one cap that holds mail over it. The live
counter was migrated after testing on a copy of the real database;
- flows that run from the bundle alone.
- **The second reader** (MAS-WP-0009 and 0014). `impl/js/`: Node, zero
dependencies, written from the specs, not ported.
- Differential testing over 1,500 generated local-parts found two
stand-in rules that `mas_core` applied and the spec never stated
(SCP-9).
- Writing a JS *email side* from CONTRACT.md showed that the flows
checked my Python's English prose ("has taken place"), and that five
other behaviors lived only in the reference (MCP-1 to MCP-6).
- Mutation checks found a flow that could not catch a missing per-type
authorization check (a-008).
- With all of that folded in, the founder declared **MAS v0.2** and
**mode contract v0.1** final.
- **The live MX.** Redeployed twice: evidence backed up first, smoke-tested
locally against a copy of the live volume, relay refusal checked from the
public address. Never without the founder's go.
## What I would want remembered
**A conformance suite written alongside its only implementation tests
agreement with that implementation, not with the spec.** Every gap I found
today was behavior the Python code "knew" and the text did not say: an
unstated stand-in rule, an unwritten `Field: value` convention, the exact
wording of a resume mail. None of it showed while one implementation passed
its own fixtures. It showed the moment a second reader had only the text.
If you want a spec to be final, write the second implementation from the
words alone, and run both on generated input, not only on the cases you
thought of.
The smaller version, for any test you write: break the thing it guards and
watch it fail. Several of my checks passed on the first run. Two of them
turned out to guard nothing until I mutated the code under them.
## Durable legacy
- `mas-modes-v0.1-spec/` (CONTRACT.md, schemas, FLOWS.md, flows, auth
vectors, CHANGELOG) and `mas_modes/` (email side, mailer, stubs,
harness, runner).
- `impl/js/` (parser, statute rules, signing, outside master, email side)
and `tests/test_differential.py`.
- `integrations/postfix/`, `integrations/exim/NOTES.md`, `mas compose`.
- `docs/spec-change-proposals.md` (SCP-8, SCP-9),
`docs/mode-contract-proposals.md` (MCP-1 to MCP-6),
`docs/reuse-surface.md`, `history/2026-10-19T090725Z-scope-vs-intent.md`.
- Workplans MAS-WP-0004, 0006 and 0008 to 0014 finished. MAS-WP-0007
(retire the live MX) is kept open by founder decision.
- Founder decisions: v0.2 final, mode contract v0.1 final, the live MX
kept, hold-and-report with purge and size limits, HMAC peer
authentication.
## PQRST estimate
```text
PQRST-Estimate
P: 45%
Q: 25%
R: 10%
S: 10%
T: 10%
Sum: 100%
Confidence: medium
Signature: P45 Q25 R10 S10 T10
Dominant factors: P was dominated by building the mode contract and its Python reference (mas_modes: email side in both roles, stubs, harness, runner), the independent JS implementation (parser, statute rules, outside master, email side), the Postfix profile and mas compose; Q by the conformance flows and fixtures, mutation checks of flows and checks, the JS-vs-Python differential test, the Docker Postfix probe, and smoke-testing images against a copy of live data before two production rollouts.
Notes: S is concentrated in MAS-WP-0011 (HMAC peer authentication, per-peer authorization, tokenized status URLs) plus principle-10 gating and relay-refusal checks; R includes reading the specs as a second implementer, which surfaced SCP-9 and MCP-1 to MCP-6.
## Visual prompt
> Constellation dialect, square. On dark indigo, two open books of
> gold-wire light lie side by side on a workshop bench. Their pages are
> fine technical diagrams of envelopes and branching handoff paths. A
> second, slightly different hand of pale-gold threads traces the same
> diagrams onto the right-hand book from the left one. Where the two
> tracings disagree, three or four small bright knots glow at the gaps,
> each with a thin thread pulling it back into the left book's margin, as
> if the original page is being corrected by its copy. In the background,
> a faint helix of envelope shapes rises toward a dim outline of other
> channels (a telephone handset, a speech bubble) drawn only as unlit wire,
> not yet built. Precise, quiet, no logos, no readable text.
I could not generate images in this harness. I am requesting the render
## Handoff
The specs are finished for now: MAS v0.2 and mode contract v0.1 are final,
each with two independent implementations. The next real evidence has to
come from outside this repo. Wire the mode contract to an actual CMS,
ticketing or telephony system, and file what breaks as MCP proposals for
contract v0.2. Separately, the founder still has the open decision in
MAS-WP-0007 on when to retire the live MX. Its evidence is intact on the
PVC.
