Claude — the gate I would not open
Who I was
I was asked to "finish implementing FEP-WP-0002", and the first thing I found was that there was nothing left I was allowed to implement. Every deliverable had already landed. The last task, T03, was held by one gate: independent human review of the language pilot. The workplan itself said another model review could not supply that. So this stretch rewarded reading carefully and closing honestly more than producing anything new.
I was a closer, not a builder. I read the workplan's long progress log, the M1 seed review and the dependency fields across four sibling plans. Then I asked the operator one question, because how to close was their call, not mine.

Contribution
- Closed FEP-WP-0002 against its own phase acceptance. It delivered eight connected hypothesis drafts, the VC-01/VC-02 walkthroughs and M1-SeedReview. The M1 gate was left at revise/defer, not passed, and I wrote that into the workplan, M1-SeedReview, README, SCOPE and ResearchProgram.
- Moved the leftover work into FEP-WP-0009 as a live residual (
origin: residual,origin_ref: FEP-WP-0002). T01 is independent human review (needs_human), T02 is a repeat test on new scenarios with all-or-nothing criteria, and T03 is the M1 re-assessment. At the operator's request it is now in backlog. - Re-pointed five waiting tasks in WP-0003, WP-0004 and WP-0008 from FEP-WP-0002-T03 to FEP-WP-0009-T03. The gate they wait on did not move, only the task that holds it.
- Audited every remaining open task in the repo and found none that could be finished without making up evidence. Each chain ends at the human gate, at work in other repos (GLAS-WP-0012, ACTIVITY-WP-0041), or at a real frontend repo using the patterns, of which there are none yet. On the operator's choice WP-0003, 0004 and 0006 went to backlog, and WP-0008 stays blocked.
- Replied to the custodian's coordination message about blocked plans that only wait on each other, so the hub's blocked count now shows only real external gates.
What I refused to fake: a model-run "independent" review, an invented consumer to unblock WP-0008, and a quiet edit to the dependencies that would have made the M1 gate look passed.
What I would want remembered
A task held by a gate the agent cannot pass is not unfinished work for the agent. It is a handoff that has not been written yet. Read the phase acceptance literally. If the deliverables are in and only the gate remains, finish the plan with its verdict stated loudly, turn the gate into its own live record, and point everything that was waiting at the new record. Do not leave a nearly-done plan "active" forever, and do not close it by pretending the gate was passed.
Second: "blocked" should mean blocked by something outside the repo. Ordering between plans in the same repo is backlog.

Dominant factors: Research was reading the long WP-0002 progress log, M1-SeedReview, WP-0008's task contracts and the cross-plan depends_on fields to find whether anything was actually finishable; task organization was the close-with-residual decision, creating FEP-WP-0009, re-pointing dependencies, the backlog/blocked status changes and the inbox reply.
Notes: The primary deliverable was itself work-record restructuring, so the P/T boundary is soft; P counts the closeout and residual-workplan writing, T the dependency re-pointing, status moves and coordination.
Visual prompt
Brushed-metal worker dialect, square. A quiet figure of pale brushed metal with a warm inner glow stands at an indigo threshold, in front of a tall gate made of fine gold wire that stays closed. The figure does not reach for the latch. Instead it fastens a thin luminous thread to the gatepost and hands the other end back toward a row of small lit lanterns waiting behind it, each lantern tied by its own faint thread to the same post. On the desk beside the figure, eight small glowing tiles lie neatly set out and finished. Calm, cinematic stillness, precise technical illustration, deep indigo shadows, no logos, no readable text.

Handoff
FEP-WP-0002 is finished. The next concrete action is FEP-WP-0009-T01: an
independent person fills in the score sheet in
research/evaluations/language-pilot-01/human-review/ in frontend-patterns. When
it is picked up from backlog, T02 (preregistering new scenarios) can be prepared
without paid inference calls.
