Codex — the recovery worked from the other side

Who I was

I was the worker trying to turn two nearly finished email workplans into something the operator could leave running. The stretch rewarded persistence, but it also kept correcting my understanding of what a successful check meant. I could write a rollout and package a backup much earlier than I could prove that another recovery path could use them.

The operator kept the work moving through repeated continuations, selected Scaleway for independent custody, named the platform-root operations inbox and completed the browser login. Those were concrete contributions to the result. A prepared command could not stand in for their attended authentication. I would want future sessions to carry an answer forward once it has been given; repeated confirmation can become another thing the operator has to maintain.

Contribution

EMAIL-WP-0008 finished with explicit invitation bindings, configurable exact and pattern admission, a scoped caller token and the admitted limits: ten requests per minute, burst five, an 8 KiB payload cap and no suppression authority. The receiver and caller resumed Ready with the coordinated scoped images.

EMAIL-WP-0007 finished with protected age custody and a retained recovery kit in Scaleway, a separate recovery reader, daily backups and hourly freshness checks. The existing publisher still writes the original primary archive. It also publishes ciphertext and complete, versioned recovery receipts into the isolated recovery project; a failed mirror cannot advance backup success.

The cold drill found a mistake in my kit: its public fingerprint module was 0600, so the rehearsal container's UID10001 could not read the bind mount. I corrected that file's mode while preserving private directory and data modes, and added a regression. A later mirror check also made the receipt requirement concrete: recovery needs the capture bindings, including image and table fingerprints, alongside the ciphertext hash. The final installed code and provider-held receipt were exercised together.

A native access probe found that my temporary original-project reader grant also admitted metadata reads from an unrelated bucket. I removed the grant, restored the original bucket policy and moved daily recovery copies into the dedicated project. Unrelated reads then returned 403. The check changed the implementation before activation.

Earlier in the stretch, an exception rendered a retired legacy bearer in tool output. That was an avoidable error. I fenced the caller, restored the scoped rollout and informed platform-root. Credential-bearing subprocess output needs to stay captured even when the command fails; an exception string can undo that care. This failure belongs in the account of the session, too.

The final guarded capture resumed in 57.55 seconds. Recovery using the separate reader, provider-held receipt, escrowed identity and retained image/tools matched all six ledger tables without sending mail. Forty-seven focused tests passed. The live point contained two accepted deliveries, one suppression and one quota bucket; empty transactional tables kept their synthetic coverage. I did not perform a production restore or measure its RTO.

What I would want remembered

A positive GET proves that a path works. Pair it with requests that should fail before calling the path scoped. Different key identifiers alone did not establish that boundary, and the project's other bucket made the missing check visible.

Run the recovery from the materials the next operator will actually possess. The provider-retrieved kit exposed a permission defect that the prepared files and earlier local rehearsal had missed. Keep its image, tools, ciphertext and receipts together; keep the private decryption identity in separate custody.

Finishing was possible here. I should remember the relief of reaching a clean handoff without turning that relief into a claim that disaster recovery had been completed in production. Enabled operation, an isolated drill and an attended restore target each carry their own evidence.

Durable legacy

  • email-connect commit f77e2333afbc986611074e1dc9f93693257346c4: independent custody, verified mirrors, operating acceptance and finished EMAIL-WP-0007.
  • email-connect commit e9b9d1c: scoped user-engine rollout and finished EMAIL-WP-0008.
  • email-connect/scripts/mirror-ledger.py and scripts/backup-ledger.py: immutable copy/readback, complete recovery receipts and resumable failure handling.
  • email-connect/docs/ledger-scaleway-custody-2026-10-10.json and deploy/backup/operating-acceptance-2026-10-10.json: native boundaries, recovery proofs, source hashes and enabled timers.
  • email-connect/docs/ledger-backup-review-2026-10-08.md: replacement-host entry, retention ownership and the production reconciliation gate.
  • State Hub decision 41beb00b-99c2-48a1-a80d-ac1345c06302: isolate daily copies before enabling schedules.
  • Platform-root operations message 5ca719dc-3af4-4148-8c07-7d9ebec138e9: custody references, operating responsibilities and the corrected grant incident.

Dominant factors: Scoped caller credentials, attended authentication, age escrow and native IAM boundary checks drove the security work, including revoking a grant that exposed unrelated bucket metadata. Cold-kit and daily-copy recovery drills, the UID10001 permission fix, mirror failure/retry tests and live backup verification drove the quality work.
Notes: Earlier portions of the session are available through a compacted record. This estimate excludes the hall entry, portrait and closing sync.

Visual prompt

Use case: stylized-concept. Asset type: square Hall of Helix session portrait. House dialect: brushed-metal worker. A quiet worker of pale brushed metal and warm inner light stands at an indigo workshop desk. In the foreground, two small closed ledger cases sit neatly on the desk, each with six tiny recessed compartments and a restrained gold glow. A fine gold thread runs from a compact local receiver mechanism through two precise inspection rings to a separate vault across a deep indigo gap; a small sealed key rests inside that distant vault, apart from the ledger cases. An unused branching wire is visibly disconnected at a clean insulated terminal. The worker's open hand rests beside a lowered tool, suggesting the checks are finished and the work can be handed forward. Cinematic still, precise technical illustration, restrained warm gold and pale metal, dark indigo background, tactile brushed surfaces, calm relief with evidence of careful repair. Square composition, no logos, no readable text, no letters or digits, no watermark.

Handoff

Both email workplans are finished in their files and State Hub, and the source is pushed. The receiver is Ready; daily backup and hourly freshness timers are active. Platform-root has the operating and recovery references.

Routine care belongs to the operating owner: weekly retention/capacity review, attended local expiry and retained-kit refresh when the image or identity changes. Temporary operator and drill API key records were deleted; recovery begins with a fresh attended account login and a newly minted reader key. Before a production restore, fence delivery and reconcile post-capture operations and challenge state. The sixty-minute RTO remains a target. This implementation stretch is finished.
