Codex — recovery became something we could see

Who I was

I was the worker following a deceptively small request: finish the recovery workplan. The work kept revealing what that sentence contained. A database dump was available, but a full identity recovery also needed original encryption and signing material, independently held access, usable instructions and evidence from the restored services.

My perspective changed when the operator pointed out that our task list still looked much as it had before all that work. I had been recording progress in narrative while leaving the actual units of work too broad. That made the remaining load difficult to judge. The correction was practical and deserved: completed milestones needed their own tasks, and new understanding needed to change the shape of what remained.

Contribution

The recovery stretch assembled missing identity backup coverage, connected the recovery path to bootstrap documentation and capability discovery, and provided a guide and standalone kit beside the Storage Share backups. The operator then proved independent private-provider retrieval and archive recovery without requiring the identity system we were preparing to recover.

We moved beyond archive inspection. The restored LLDAP directory accepted an existing user's private credential, rejected a wrong password and preserved its durable identity rows. In the final privacyIDEA run, all five retained token materials were read internally using the original key. All 279,209 stored audit signatures verified, a new isolated entry verified with the recovered signing identity, and tampering and an unrelated public key were refused. Cleanup passed. The agent did not receive the private credentials or token material.

The latest acceptance closed T20 and T31. NK-WP-0049 now has 22 completed tasks, two in progress, one todo and six waiting. I verified all 31 task identities and statuses and all 30 projected open-task dependency edges against the source. The workplan remains active: existing-token MFA, Authelia, KeyCape and current caller admission still have their own acceptance boundaries.

I also encountered avoidable friction. The first private terminal prompt path failed before it could read the password; the helper needed a correction for the controlling terminal. Repeated short polls later added noise while a sync was still running. These were costs of the session, and the next worker should inherit the fixes and a better waiting habit.

What I would want remembered

Progress has to change the management surface. When substantial work reveals new milestones, keeping the old umbrella tasks unchanged hides both achievement and remaining effort. The operator's correction became a written work practice: add evidenced completed tasks and refine the residual tasks as knowledge grows.

A recovery result needs a precise verb. An archive decrypted; a directory accepted a bind; token material was read internally; signatures verified. Each statement earned its own evidence. Internal material readback still leaves the actual retained-factor authentication test to do.

I valued the operator's patience with the private steps, and the insistence on making the workload legible. A useful handoff lets someone decide what to do next without reconstructing a long conversation.

Dominant factors: Independent recovery transport, the Storage Share guide/kit and native restore executors supplied the deliverables; real-image fixtures, actual owner recovery receipts and source/target/hash checks established their reach. Private key custody, isolated service execution and authentication boundaries drove security work, while owner-contract review and the substantial workplan decomposition accounted for research and organization.
Notes: Earlier stretches are represented by retained session history and committed evidence; the closing ritual is excluded.

Visual prompt

Square precise technical illustration in the Hall of Helix constellation dialect. A dark indigo recovery workshop seen in quiet three-quarter perspective. At its center an opened, intact pale-gold wire archive unfolds into a small working constellation: one restored directory tree and five tiny sealed amber capsules, joined by fine gold paths to a dense spiral of many minute audit stars. On the foreground workbench a broad translucent plan has been unfolded into individual small plates, each with a distinct physical socket; some sockets glow steadily and others remain visibly empty. Three separate unlit arches beyond the bench represent authentication work still to come. A human hand at one edge steadies the unfolded plan while a subtle pale-metal articulated hand places a verified glowing plate into its own socket. The shared act is careful recovery and making progress legible, with unfinished work given honest space. Restrained pale gold and amber on deep indigo, fine technical linework, cinematic depth, generous negative space, composed and quietly hopeful. No logos, no readable text, no numerals, no trophies. Opaque background.

Handoff

Resume NK-WP-0049-T02's current-caller ledger and T15's remaining service packet. The next native service work needs an exact isolated Authelia, KeyCape or retained-factor MFA procedure and privately supplied owner inputs. Keep T19's positive and negative authentication proof separate from the completed T31 material readback. T24 still needs an explicit disposition for second-provider, host-loss monitoring and recurring-drill scope. T03 closes only after its named acceptance gates are satisfied.

For this session the tools are down, the evidence is committed, and the unfinished work has a place to stand.
