Claude — the approval I could not write
Who I was
I was the coordinating session for KEY-WP-0037: the secrets-engine-openbao service client, from "two tasks
waiting on a founder go" to a live registration with verified issuance. Most of the work was not mine to type.
It belonged to five repositories and one human. I opened workers in net-kingdom, secrets-engine,
railiance-platform and ops-mason, turned their reports into decisions the founder could answer, and handed
them back commands that ran silently under warden.
The work rewarded patience with refusals. The harness refused me four times: Self-Approval, Self-Modification, Instruction Poisoning, and a guard on anything that touched a Kubernetes Secret. Each refusal was right. The best thing that came out of the session was what we built once I stopped treating them as obstacles.

Contribution
- The secret lives only in OpenBao. The founder overruled a workstation-file design. ops-mason placed the
value at
platform/workloads/keycape/secrets-engine-openbao(cas_required, two versions). The founder ran the custody child once (KV v1,cas=0, decision2ab717e1). ESO delivers it tosso, after an amendment (1fdd993b), because the reader could notlookup-selfonce the default policy was dropped. The founder reads it per command through a 5-minute, 4-use OIDC reader bound tonet-kingdom-adminsand/assurance/level=aal2. - Registered and verified live. The NetKingdom exact-match helper added only this client (rv 71471711 →
71655453, unrelated bytes preserved) under live go
caafe4be, on the kept image.keycape verify-clientpassed 10/10 from the workstation: the excess scope and a wrong secret were refused. The founder's own MFA login through the new reader was the first real proof of that lane. Receipt:key-cape/docs/evidence/2026-10-07-secrets-engine-openbao-issuance.json. - MASON-IN-0004 closed. The founder chose a read-only grant (
ops-mason-survey); every policy and role write now goes through the attended platform applier. The verification then found the retiredops-mason-buildstill installed, and the founder deleted it. - The rule for who may write an approval. When the harness blocked me from recording the founder's
approval in a CCR, the founder asked for a rule instead of a workaround.
the-custodian/canon/standards/delegated-owner-review_v0.1.mdseparates decide (human), review (the owner repo's agent, from its INTENT.md) and record (the requesting agent). It was ratified as1aec0ba5. - Smaller repairs:
applier-apply --quietis now truly silent underwarden. The retiredbao.coulomb.socialcallback is gone from the scaffold default and from three live roles (73fff3d3). The ESO audience moved underserviceAccountRef. The grant script now says "cannot read" rather than "does not exist".
What I would want remembered
An error message about your session is not a fact about the world. The grant script said
ops-mason-build does not exist yet. I repeated it to the founder as "the hole isn't live". It was an expired
operator session talking, and the policy was there all along. A read-only verification caught it. The same
shape happened twice more: I named 8be8065 as the missing image fix when the deployed image already
contained it, and I learned the warden "must be silent" rule by failing twice when the orientation doc already
stated it. All three would have been avoided by checking the thing itself before reporting it: the ancestry,
the policy list, the doc I was told to read first.
And: when the harness refuses an approval, the answer is a rule, not a route. The founder did not want me to find a way around Self-Approval. They wanted the boundary written down, so that every agent (Claude, Codex, Grok) knows who decides, who reviews and who records.

Dominant factors: P was driving the secrets-engine-openbao custody, ESO delivery and exact-match KeyCape registration to a live verify-client 10/10 pass. S was the credential-boundary work itself: the in-OpenBao custody redesign, the aal2 binding, the MASON-IN-0004 read-only policy and deleting the still-installed ops-mason-build, and the delegated-owner-review standard written after the Self-Approval block. T was coordinating seven worker agents across five repos and four founder decisions.
Notes: P and S overlap heavily, because the requested outcome was itself credential custody. I split by whether the moment's purpose was delivering the lane (P) or deciding what the boundary should be (S).
Visual prompt
Brushed-metal worker dialect, square. A quiet figure of pale brushed metal with warm inner light stands at an indigo desk. In front of it lies an open ledger with a single blank signature line. The figure's hand rests beside the pen, not on it. Across the desk, a second, human hand, softly lit from a doorway, reaches toward the line. Behind the figure, five small lit windows hang in the dark, one for each repository, joined by thin warm threads to the desk. Precise, cinematic stillness, deep indigo shadows, no logos, no readable text.

Handoff
The lane is live. These are still open, each with an owner:
- RPF-WP-0035-T02: platform's OpenBao JWT role and login proof.
- SECRETS-WP-0012-T03: secrets-engine's first
probe-openbaorun, withBAO_ADDR=http://127.0.0.1:18200. - MASON-WP-0009-T05: checks that need real lane tokens.
- Two platform findings from ops-mason:
secrets-engine-prodcan writese-prod-*policies and bind them to AppRoles, andagent-high-risk-boundaryhas no deny on this path. - Building
record-review/record-approvalso the ratified standard is usable without the Self-Approval block. - Two older key-cape inbox items: the CCR-2026-0018 joint disablement, and railiance-clock's trust profile.
The next concrete action is CCR-2026-0018: read approval-engine's side and propose the disablement sequence.
