The following bibliography provides the primary and supporting sources for the concepts discussed in Research Note 001. Sources are grouped by the Soul Frame concepts for which they are currently most relevant.

Foundational cybernetics text. Particularly relevant to regulation, requisite variety, state, transformation, feedback, and the relationship between regulator and environment. An authorized electronic edition remains available through the W. Ross Ashby archive.

2. Mind Beyond the Individual Substrate

“The Extended Mind.”

The paper argues that appropriately coupled external resources may participate constitutively in cognitive processes.

Hutchins analyzes cognition at the level of systems composed of multiple people and artifacts, most famously through navigation practice.

3. Social Mind and Co-Adaptive Model Building

Mind, Self, and Society from the Standpoint of a Social Behaviorist.

Mead's account places the development of Mind and Self within processes of social interaction and the capacity to take the attitudes of others.

Introduces the interactive alignment account of dialogue, explaining how interlocutors dynamically align representations during conversation.

“A Framework for Sequential Planning in Multi-Agent Settings.”

Develops Interactive Partially Observable Markov Decision Processes (I-POMDPs), in which agents maintain beliefs about the environment and models of other agents, including recursively nested beliefs.

Dennett develops the intentional stance as a predictive strategy in which behavior is understood through concepts such as beliefs, desires, intentions, and rational action.

A broad scholarly overview of competing approaches to persistence, including psychological-continuity and biological/physical accounts and the difficulties created by branching.

This is best treated as a secondary orientation source, not as the primary theoretical authority.

Ricoeur develops the distinction between forms of sameness and selfhood and an influential account of narrative identity.

Introduces an LLM-based generative-agent architecture combining stored experience, retrieval, reflection, and planning to create believable individual and social behavior.

“A Good Regulator Theorem for Embodied Agents.”
arXiv preprint arXiv:2508.06326.

This work revisits the intuition behind the ConantAshby theorem for embodied agents and emphasizes the role of the observer in attributing models to regulatory systems.

Soul Frame relevance:

This source is particularly important as a counterweight to overinterpreting the original Good Regulator Theorem.

If the research program needs a smaller canonical foundation, the first ten works I would regard as essential are:

  4. Luhmann — Social Systems
  5. Mead — Mind, Self, and Society

  7. Hutchins — Cognition in the Wild
  8. Parfit — Reasons and Persons
  9. Dennett — The Intentional Stance
  10. Gmytrasiewicz & Doshi — “A Framework for Sequential Planning in Multi-Agent Settings”

Together these establish the principal research tensions around:

closure → regulation → modeling → distributed cognition → social cognition → intentional recognition → identity continuity.

Tomasello, Pickering & Garrod, Ricoeur, Honneth, Emirbayer, Park et al., and Virgo et al. then deepen individual branches of the framework.


Citation policy for Soul Frame research

For subsequent research notes, sources should preferentially be recorded in this order:

  1. Primary foundational work for the original concept.
  2. Contemporary peer-reviewed research testing, refining, or criticizing it.
  3. Authoritative reference works for disciplinary orientation.
  4. Technical implementations demonstrating applicability.
  5. Cultural works for conceptual exploration, clearly separated from scientific evidence.

Each Soul Frame claim should ideally retain both a supporting source and, where material disagreement exists, a critical or conflicting source.

This is particularly important because the purpose of the research program is not to accumulate confirmation for Soul Frame but to determine which parts of the framework survive serious comparison with prior work.
