Being Criteria v0.1

1. Purpose
This document preserves the first formal attempt within Soul Frame to define criteria for Systemic Beinghood.
The criteria were derived from research into:
- autopoiesis,
- organizational closure,
- biological autonomy,
- adaptivity,
- normativity,
- agency,
- process ontology,
- and information-theoretic individuality.
The original hypothesis was that a Being could be characterized through a multidimensional profile of individuation, continuity, self-maintenance, adaptive regulation, and identity-preserving transformation.
Subsequent adversarial testing in Research Note 003 showed that these criteria can be strongly satisfied by systems such as:
- self-maintaining software daemons,
- sophisticated infrastructure control planes,
- corporations,
- and collective adaptive systems,
without those systems necessarily exposing the degree of personhood intended by the Soul Frame concept of a Being.
The criteria therefore remain useful, but their interpretation has changed.
Historical conclusion: Being Criteria v0.1 more accurately describe autonomous individuality than complete Soul Frame Beinghood.
This document is retained as a research artifact so that the evolution of the framework remains explicit and inspectable.
2. Original working definition
The initial working definition was:
A systemic Being is an individuated process that preserves temporal integrity through an integrated organization whose own activity contributes to maintaining and adaptively regulating the conditions of its continued identity.
The criteria were not intended as binary gates.
They were conceived as a multidimensional profile:

3. Criteria
B1 — Individuability
Definition
There must be defensible grounds for distinguishing the candidate system from its environment.
The relevant boundary may be:
- physical,
- operational,
- informational,
- causal,
- organizational,
- social,
- or some combination.
The boundary does not have to be perfectly sharp.
Evaluation questions
- Can states and processes meaningfully be attributed to this system rather than its environment?
- Is there a defensible reason to treat the candidate as one system?
- Does the proposed boundary correspond to persistent causal, informational, or organizational structure?
- Would substantially different observers identify approximately the same individual under similar analytical purposes?
Important caution
A detectable boundary is evidence for individuation, not sufficient evidence for Beinghood.
B2 — Temporal Integrity
Definition
The candidate entity must exhibit meaningful continuity through time.
Its present and future organization should depend substantially on its own previous organization rather than being arbitrarily reconstructed at each moment by the environment.
Evaluation questions
- Does knowledge of the candidate's past materially help explain its present or future state?
- Are successive states causally and informationally connected?
- Does the system carry forward structures that belong specifically to its own history?
- Would deleting its history while preserving generic functionality create a materially different entity?
Interpretation
Temporal persistence alone is insufficient. A rock persists, but this does not establish adaptive or autonomous individuality.
B3 — Constitutive Integration
Definition
The processes attributed to the entity must form a sufficiently integrated organization.
The entity must be more than a convenient collection of independent components.
Evaluation questions
- Do components mutually depend on one another for realization of the continuing system?
- Are there feedback relations connecting major components?
- Does removal of some components disrupt the organization rather than merely reduce unrelated functionality?
- Is there a coherent organizational level at which the entity makes better explanatory sense than its parts considered independently?
Interpretation
Co-location is not integration.
Integration concerns the organization through which the entity is realized.
B4 — Self-Maintenance Participation
Definition
The system's own operations must contribute materially to maintaining the organization constituting its identity.
Full material self-production is not required.
Evaluation questions
- Does the system detect threats to its own continued organization?
- Does it repair, protect, restore, or preserve constitutive structures?
- Does it participate in maintaining memory, identity, integrity, or required resources?
- Would the system persist less reliably if its own maintenance operations were disabled?
Interpretation
Autonomy does not require self-sufficiency.
A system may depend heavily on an environment while still participating in maintaining itself.
B5 — Endogenous Viability
Definition
The system must possess conditions whose preservation matters to continued existence as this entity.
For biological systems these may include metabolic or physiological viability conditions.
For artificial systems candidate viability conditions may include:
- identity integrity,
- continuity,
- memory coherence,
- resource sufficiency,
- access to constitutive services,
- recoverability,
- authorized control,
- and preservation of critical relationships or commitments.
Evaluation questions
- Are there states in which continued identity becomes more or less viable?
- Can the system distinguish damage from ordinary transformation?
- Are some conditions constitutively better or worse for continued existence of this entity?
- Do such conditions arise from the entity's organization rather than only from an external task specification?
Important caution
This criterion raised unresolved questions about whether artificial systems can possess genuinely endogenous rather than creator-imposed norms.
B6 — Adaptive Regulation
Definition
The entity must be able to regulate internal state or environmental coupling according to tendencies relevant to viability or continuity.
Evaluation questions
- Does the system detect trajectories that threaten its continuing organization?
- Can it alter behavior in response?
- Can it compensate for disturbances?
- Does regulation change based on changing circumstances?
- Does the system distinguish merely current failure from movement toward future failure?
Interpretation
Adaptivity is stronger than passive robustness.
A robust object may survive disturbances without detecting or regulating them.
B7 — Interactional Asymmetry
Definition
The entity must sometimes function as an active source of changes in its coupling with the environment rather than being completely reducible to environmental forcing.
Evaluation questions
- Does the system initiate actions?
- Can its internal organization materially determine what happens next?
- Does it select among possible interactions?
- Can it resist, redirect, or transform environmental pressures?
Interpretation
This criterion is derived from stronger autonomy theories of agency and should not be confused with the very broad software-engineering use of the word agent.
B8 — Identity-Preserving Transformation
Definition
The entity must be capable of changing while maintaining sufficient continuity for those changes to remain attributable to the same evolving system.
Evaluation questions
- Can components be replaced without necessarily creating a new entity?
- Can the system learn while retaining identity?
- Can roles, capabilities, or embodiment change?
- Can the entity recover from interruption while preserving continuity?
- Is there a principled distinction between evolution of the entity and replacement by another entity?
Important caution
This criterion exposes unresolved problems involving:
- copying,
- forking,
- restoration,
- merging,
- simultaneous manifestations,
- and Actor replacement.
These are deferred to Soul Frame's identity and continuity research.
4. Original evaluation profile
The criteria were originally intended to support qualitative or later quantitative assessment.
A simple qualitative vocabulary is:

No aggregate score should be calculated without further theoretical justification.
5. Falsification result
Research Note 003 tested the criteria against heterogeneous systems including:
- organisms,
- collectives,
- corporations,
- infrastructure control planes,
- language models,
- stateless chatbots,
- persistent agents,
- Spirits,
- Ghost archives,
- and self-maintaining daemons.
The decisive counterexample was a hypothetical self-maintaining daemon that:
- monitors its own integrity,
- protects identity material,
- repairs corruption,
- maintains backups,
- migrates away from failing infrastructure,
- acquires required resources,
- and preserves continuity.
Such a system can satisfy nearly all eight criteria while exposing almost none of the richer dimensions of personhood that Soul Frame intends to capture with the term Being.
Conversely, a stateless chatbot can expose substantial person-like behavior while scoring poorly on autonomous individuality.
Therefore:

6. Supersession decision
The eight criteria remain useful.
Their interpretation changes from:

The current Soul Frame working model separates at least:
- Autonomous Individuality — how strongly a self-maintaining individual exists.
- Personhood — how strongly the entity exposes someone-like properties.
- Addressability — whether interaction and attribution can target this particular entity over time.
- Recognition — whether other Beings model it as a continuing counterpart.
- Social Beinghood — whether persistent reciprocal relationships, expectations, roles, and commitments emerge.
A provisional stronger formulation is:

This expression is conceptual, not arithmetic.
7. Historical value of this document
BeingCriteriaV0.1.md should remain in the repository because the falsified hypothesis is informative.
It establishes that Soul Frame deliberately distinguishes:
- persistence from self-maintenance,
- self-maintenance from personhood,
- regulation from agency,
- capability from individuality,
- and individuality from Beinghood.
