Working definition

Character is a relatively persistent structure of dispositions from which context-dependent behavior emerges.

Distinct from:

  • state (fast-changing conditions),
  • behavior (contextual expression),
  • role / persona (situated projection),
  • identity (sameness of the Being over time).

Notes for research

Artificial character should produce recognizable patterns across novel situations, not merely imitate vocabulary or mannerisms.
