# Commentary: Wolfgang Deppert — *Die Evolution des Bewusstseins*
|

## 1. Paper thesis (internal reconstruction)
|
||
|
||
Deppert’s problem: if humans evolved from animals, consciousness cannot be a
|
||
mysterious human exception (as in Kant’s denial of animal apperception). We need
|
||
a **general** concept of consciousness grounded in a **general** concept of life.
|
||
|
||
**Life:** an open system with a survival problem it can solve for a while.
|
||
|
||
**Five survival functions:** perception; assessment (esp. of danger); readiness of
|
||
measures; execution of measures; energy supply. These must be organizationally
|
||
coupled for fast response.
|
||
|
||
**Definitional move:** that **coupling organization is consciousness**. Hence every
|
||
living being with differentiated functions has consciousness; earliest undivided
|
||
forms need not. Consciousness always involves a **will to survive**.
|
||
|
||
**Teleology:** will is final, not causal. Modern science’s causal dogma made will
|
||
and free will unspeakable. Open-system **attractors** supply final determination of
|
||
possible futures and reconcile final with causal description. Will enters the world
|
||
as survival-will in the form of attractors (even at molecular “proto-life”).
|
||
|
||
**Evolution of forms:** division of labor → first consciousness; cell associations →
|
||
hierarchies of wills (subordinate consciousness in herds and childhood); world-picture
|
||
representations for *human* consciousness; cultural evolution to **individuality-consciousness**
|
||
(not genetic). Libet experiments measure coupling delay, not the nonexistence of will.
|
||
|
||
**Culture and ethics:** human communities are **cultural living beings** with
|
||
survival-will and demands on members. Individuals choose among memberships under
|
||
self-preservation of outer and **inner** existence (dignity), yielding individualistic
|
||
ethics. Closing unitarian formula (via Schweitzer): life that wants to live amid life
|
||
that wants to live.
|

## 4. Where Soul Frame is supported
|
||
|
||
1. **Life without human exceptionalism** — consciousness-as-human-essence is rejected;
|
||
SF also refuses consciousness as the sole interop criterion between beings.
|
||
|
||
2. **Open systems + self-maintenance** — D-03/D-04 align with autonomous individuality
|
||
(viability, self-maintenance, adaptive regulation).
|
||
|
||
3. **Functional differentiation + integration** — supports B3 constitutive integration
|
||
and the Body/Mind split of action vs assessment/planning.
|
||
|
||
4. **Gradedness** — earliest life may lack “consciousness”; higher forms add
|
||
representation and world-picture — compatible with multidimensional profiles (H1).
|
||
|
||
5. **Nested systems** — cells, organs, herds, cultural groups as layered systems
|
||
strengthen TE-05 and multi-level individuality.
|
||
|
||
6. **Cultural individuality** — individuality-consciousness as cultural acquisition
|
||
supports Phase III: someone-like status is not pure genetics (H2 adjacency).
|
||
|
||
7. **Attractors / possible futures** — friendly to Mind as model-guided control of
|
||
possible states (H3), without requiring hard determinism.
|
||
|
||
8. **Libet caution** — process timing ≠ absence of agency; SF-compatible methodology.
|
||

||
## 5. Where Soul Frame is challenged
|
||
|
||
### C1 — Definitional capture of “Bewusstsein” (primary challenge)
|
||
|
||
Deppert *defines* consciousness as the coupling organization of survival functions.
|
||
Under that definition, a thermostat-plus-metabolism or a bacterium with differentiated
|
||
loops “has consciousness.”
|
||
|
||
Soul Frame **cannot absorb this definition** without collapsing:
|
||
|
||
- Mind (model-based regulation),
|
||
- constitutive integration,
|
||
- and first-person consciousness
|
||
|
||
into one word. SF’s working stance remains:
|
||
|
||
> Consciousness may matter first-personally; third-person Beinghood uses closure,
|
||
> continuity, personhood, addressability, recognition.
|
||
|
||
**Pressure:** SF must state more loudly that German *Bewusstsein* / English
|
||
*consciousness* in evolutionary essays often means **control integration**, not
|
||
phenomenal awareness — and SF should not cede the word “Mind” to that either
|
||
without a glossary bridge.
|
||
|
||
### C2 — Molecular will / pan-will risk
|
||
|
||
“Will enters the world as system attractors” (even pre-biotic molecular survival)
|
||
pushes teleology very deep. SF can accept attractor language for control theory but
|
||
should **not** equate every attractor with intentional agency or Beinghood (daemon /
|
||
control-plane false positives return).
|
||
|
||
### C3 — Cultural groups as Lebewesen
|
||
|
||
Calling families, clubs, firms, and states living beings matches Deppert’s
|
||
definitional premises but collides with SF’s hard-won split:
|
||
|
||
autonomous individuality ≠ personhood ≠ social recognition.
|
||
|
||
RN-003 already flagged **corporations** as false positives for Being. Deppert
|
||
would call them cultural living beings with consciousness (coupling of functions)
|
||
and survival-will. SF may EXTEND nested systems analysis but should **not** grant
|
||
Beinghood to every organization that has roles and continuity of process.
|
||
|
||
### C4 — Artificial beings / energy and survival
|
||
|
||
Deppert’s five functions include **energy supply** and a real **survival problem**.
|
||
Most software agents have neither metabolism nor self-preservation stakes; they have
|
||
externally assigned tasks. Under Deppert they are not Lebewesen → no Bewusstsein.
|
||
|
||
SF Phase IV allows APE and candidate Being via **informational** self-maintenance.
|
||
Deppert challenges whether that is enough, or whether SF must require something
|
||
like a viability stake (B5 endogenous viability) more strictly for “life-like” status.
|
||
|
||
### C5 — Ethics packed into ontology
|
||
|
||
Inner existence = dignity → individualistic ethics is valuable but SF must keep
|
||
**moral personhood** off the descriptive stack (Phase III discipline).

Deppert does **not** treat posthumous simulation. His framework would likely treat a
|
||
Ghost as a new system that either has or lacks its own survival problem — not as
|
||
continuation of the deceased’s will, unless one **identifies** the system’s attractors
|
||
with the person’s — which SF forbids without continuity analysis (Phase V).
|
||
