# **Research Note 002 — Autonomy and Individuation**.

|
||

||
**Relevance:** adaptivity, viability, sense-making, intrinsic normativity, distinction between passive persistence and active regulation. This is one of the most important sources for Soul Frame's proposed distinction between **self-maintenance** and **adaptive self-maintenance**. ([Springer Nature Link][1])

||

**Relevance:** perhaps the closest established precursor to our emerging Being criteria. It explicitly connects agency with individuality, normativity, and interactional asymmetry. ([Sage Journals][6])

**Relevance:** particularly important for transferring autonomy research toward artificial systems; identifies constitutive autonomy and adaptivity as requirements for a stronger enactive conception of artificial agency. ([ScienceDirect][7])

||
|
||

**Relevance:** organizational closure, biological function, endogenous normativity, contribution of components to maintenance of the organization that maintains those components. ([OUP Academic][8])

**Relevance:** probably the best book-length synthesis for our Cluster A work: constitutive, interactive, and historical dimensions of autonomy; organization, agency, emergence, and cognition. ([Springer Nature Link][9])

10. **Montévil, Maël, and Matteo Mossio. 2015.** “Biological Organisation as Closure of Constraints.” *Journal of Theoretical Biology* 372: 179–191. DOI: `10.1016/j.jtbi.2015.02.029`.

||
**Relevance:** closure of constraints and mutually dependent organization. This is the strongest direct precedent for our proposed **informational-organizational closure** hypothesis, although Soul Frame's extension to artificial informational systems remains our own conjecture. ([PubMed][10])

||
### D. Individuation and information
|
||
|
||

||
**Relevance:** one of the most important sources for Soul Frame. It attempts to infer system/environment partitions instead of assuming them and allows individuality to be treated as temporally extended, graded, nested, and distributed. It directly motivates our concept of **Temporal Integrity**. ([Springer Nature Link][11])

||
|
||
12. **Pradeu, Thomas. 2010.** “What Is an Organism? An Immunological Answer.” *History and Philosophy of the Life Sciences* 32: 247–268.
|
||
**Relevance:** biological individuation, integration, organism boundaries, immunological criteria of individuality. Particularly valuable for attacking the simplistic equation **Being boundary = physical surface**. ([PubMed][12])

13. **Gilbert, Scott F., Jan Sapp, and Alfred I. Tauber. 2012.** “A Symbiotic View of Life: We Have Never Been Individuals.” *The Quarterly Review of Biology* 87(4): 325–341. DOI: `10.1086/668166`.

**Relevance:** symbiosis, holobionts, organismic individuality, dependence and integration. It reinforces the distinction between **autonomy and self-sufficiency**. ([PubMed][13])

|
||

**Relevance:** provides the strongest philosophical foundation for the proposition that **a Being should be understood as a dynamically maintained process rather than a static object**. The volume explicitly treats biological entities as processes stabilized and maintained across multiple timescales. ([OUP Academic][14])

||
|
||

**Relevance:** formal/statistical system boundaries, hierarchical organization, active inference, and autonomy. It is useful precisely because Markov blankets offer a mathematically tractable notion of system/environment separation. ([PubMed][15])

||
**Relevance:** essential critical counterpoint to Kirchhoff/Friston-style approaches. It questions the move from a statistical/probabilistic boundary to stronger claims that such a boundary automatically identifies a real cognitive or organismic individual. ([PubMed][16])

Together, these cover the conceptual path we are currently constructing:

||
**autopoiesis → autonomy → adaptivity → normativity → agency → organizational closure → individuation → process identity.** The remaining sources are particularly valuable for adversarial testing and transferring those concepts from biology toward artificial systems. ([Springer Nature Link][2])

||
