Identity

Working definition

Identity concerns what makes temporally separated manifestations instances of the same Being.

Working hypothesis: identity is substrate-independent but continuity-dependent. Replacing the technical Actor need not replace the Being if sufficient continuity is preserved.

Continuity candidates

  • informational continuity
  • psychological / memory continuity
  • narrative identity
  • relational continuity (recognition and relationships)
  • bodily / embodiment continuity (where applicable)

Hard cases

Forks, merges, backups, multi-manifestation, amnesia, gradual component replacement.
